Poor Midway Games. At one point, many moons ago, they dominated a good chunk of the entire video game industry. And now they are coming up to a fire sale auction of all their assets this summer, before descending further into a black pit of bankruptcy.
A subsidiary of Midway Games, Midway Newcastle (makers of Wheelman), had apparently been working on an unannounced (until now) game called Necessary Force. The concept sounds pretty strong: open world sand box game (GTA type city), where you play a detective busting crooks. Add in a heavy crime noir influence and hey, it doesn't sound all that bad.
The game is beyond the initial stages of development. Judging by this video, they defintely appear of the half-way hump.
Talking to the magazine Develop, Midway Newcastle head Craig Duncan said that the equivalent of 35 man-years of work has already been completed in modifying the Unreal Engine 3; making it able to handle large amounts of moving traffic in a lively city. "UE3 is built for characters walking through levels, not people speeding at more than 100 miles per hour through a seamless world. We've overcome that...we've got this great base of technology for open-world games."
This game looks promising, and the team has already put a lot of work into it -- hopefully they will not have a hard time finding someone to pick up the further production costs in this rough worldwide economic situation.
