I pay an extra $5 a month for additional 200 texts on top of my family plan, and even I don't use up that many. Whatever happened to calling people for a chat, or waiting until you're home to message them on AIM or whatever.

It's certainly cheaper~

I average about 8,000 a month. My sister one time sent over 21,000 a month. We have unlimited so we didn't have this problem.

I send about 6500 a month, but I have unlimited since I have the Blackberry plan through Verizon Wireless. I remember when I first started texting my girlfriend, and i sent 3000 in a month (back when I was still on my family plan), my dad s*** a brick. That was the end of me on his plan lol. But now II got my CrackBerry yay. /rambling

Depends what your field is or how you network, I'm certainly not going to call friends abroad during daytime hours if I have unlimited text regardless of network. Certainly a lot cheaper to say the least. But it really is a YMMV situation. Casual phone users just use it for a simple function, power users make use of all aspects of their service to work their needs.

Haha, the most I've ever sent in a month was about 5000, but most of that was using MSN on my phone. I, however, was smart enough to get an unlimited texting plan before doing this.

I dated a girl that sent 10,000 text messages in a month, though fortunately she had unlimited messaging. Unfortunately, it still means she had no life.

Ten thousand messages is indeed a lot, but remember that every 160 characters counts as a new text. It's easy to get carried away and have "instant message" type conversations. Either way it's unsurprising that her grades dropped so quickly! A lesson learnt, I hope.

Also, where is the sense in charging for incoming messages?!

Good point. I had forgotten about the 140/160 character limitation for text messages... though if I'm going to send something larger than that, it usually gets an email.

I can't begin to imagine what it was like for the parents to get a $5K phone bill, especially if they thought that they had a texting plan that, while not unlimited, was at least comprehensive. Talk about shock! Without debating the appropriateness of the volume of the rampant texting, I get particularly riled when parents are stuck with huge bills; I hear about this all the time because I work for the consumer advocacy website http://www.fixmycellbill.com, powered by a company called Validas, where we slash the average cell bill by 22 percent. People like the Christoffersons may not have been actively misled by their providers, but they were clearly unaware of the vulnerability of their cell plans to their kids’ texting habits. I could go on and on about how shifty these cell companies can be in their attempts to make you overpay. I'll mention that at Validas, we stop them and have currently put over $5,000,000 back in the pockets of consumers. You can check out Validas’s fixmycellbill.com in the national news media, most recently on Good Morning America at http://www.abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=6887412&page=1. So yes, to answer thedudeoforkut, people are doing something about the cell phone providers.

Good luck to everyone trying to lower your wireless expenses down in this rough economy.

HA, ya right. you do know that 20k is actually 20000. That breaks down to one text ever two minutes, assuming you go at a steady pace and are awake 24 hours per day for the entire month.
