In other words: "Wikipedia kicked our butt."

I for one will miss Encarta, but come on Microsoft. Is it really that hard to admit it?

What's going to happen to their content? Filed away in a drawer somewhere?

I wonder if you can even buy Encyclopedia Britannica paper encyclopedia sets anymore. They must be incredibly expensive.

I'm an undergrad in Silicon Valley. As a matter of fact I'm studying Computer Engineering (some old people used to call it CSEE.)

At our school we are absolutely not allowed to use Wikipedia as a source for anything. Don't get me wrong; I do use it; but, it can't be cited as a source for any papers.

The reason for this restriction is that the information in there is not guaranteed to be correct; and can easily be edited by someone with malicious intent. So, even if a Wiki topic was verified correct at one time, it does not mean it is now.

In short Wikipedia is not a trusted source. To borrow a law analogy; It can be treated as "circumstantial evidence" only.

Wikipedia isn't allowed to be used for research at my school.

Nor mine, but you can go on it and look at the references as I did for one of my essays.

Same for my university, it's not allowed to cite as a source in papers. You can use it early in your research but you can't cite it. Even Neo isn't using Wikipedia as a source .

I don't understand why they need to take down the website though? Leave some servers up, not a big deal.
