I have no problems with digital distribution. BUT when games are still the same price on steam as they are in a retail outlet, I'd rather go get myself a hard copy of the same title. I dont understand why DD is still the same price as retail after cutting out one of the middle men. Even moreso when us Canadians purchase a steam game and then get hit with the exchange rate on top of that. Maybe if they put the total with the exchange rate in the checkout menu, that would be fair warning but when I find out about it once I'm looking at my statement each month it just pisses me off.

Yessir, Steam definitely has its problems, but according to what I've read this is a natural challenge of the system, and something they're trying to overcome. Hopefully they do, it would definitely make a very successful service a lot more successful. I might even go so far as to say that move alone would very quickly ensure their trump over retail.

Prince of Persia for PC in store: $39.99 CAD. Prince of Persia on STEAM: $49.99USD (= $64CAD at today's conversion rate).

Until recently Far Cry 2 was $49.99 USD on STEAM too, but I checked today and saw:

Far Cry 2 in store: $49.99 CAD.
Far Cry 2 on STEAM: $29.99 USD. ($38CAD).

So you win some you lose some, but IMO a STEAM title should NEVER cost as much as the retail box, let alone MORE than the retail box (as is still the case with POP and many other titles in Canada).

DD is the way forward. I'm going to miss boxes and I'm really going to miss paper-bound, actual game manuals; but it's all going to go DD eventually. It is just too convenient to download a game then going to a store and picking one up.

Funny thing about the all that whole wave of "PC gaming is dead" stories in 2008 did not take into account DD at all -- they were only looking at box sales. PC gaming boxes is dying; but PC gaming is alive and well and not going anywhere anytime soon.

I think companies will always publish physical copies of games cause some people will always want them..well, at least the popular ones and cult favourites. They'll probably just go the way of Atlus with limited quanities..

Perhaps physical copies of PC games from the publisher will be one of those things that we'll have to special order later on down the road. In turn opening up another market niche for collectors, and price premiums ?
