New Super Mario Bros. Wii is one of the games in the Super Mario Bros game series and features the same plot as the other games in the series; Princess Peach has been kidnapped by Bowser and Mario must fight his way through various worlds to save her.
It was developed and published by Nintendo as a Wii exclusive in 2009.
There are nine different worlds and around 80 levels that that player needs to play through in a linear style; some of the levels contain secrets for the player to discover which can unlock some new levels which do not follow the linear path. Each level is a 2.5D side-scroller, and they also contain 3 Star Coins which are hidden and are used to unlock a bonus level.
While moving across the world map to reach new levels or worlds, the player can bump into different mini-bosses which will start a fight; completing one will reward the player with items. There are also other mini-games on the map which can be completed to gain more items that can be used in the different levels.
Most levels in the game have a checkpoint in the middle; once the checkpoint is reached, respawning in the world will send the player back to that point. The end of the level also has a flag that indicated the level is complete; several levels also have alternative paths to the level exit.
Players can collect various power-ups which provide them with special abilities and allows them to take more damage; these items are gained by hitting a question block when jumping underneath it. With this items, the player can have an alternative method of travel or a new attack method. In addition to this, Yoshi can spawn from eggs and the player can ride them for faster travel or to attack enemies.
There is no health in the game. Instead, players will lose their power-up and shrink in size if they are hit; if the player is hit while being the smallest size, then they will die. Combat is mostly focused on jumping on the heads of enemies however they are some that must be avoided as touching them will deal damage.
 What's New
This is the first game to allow up to four players in one instance; four players can work together co-cooperatively and play through the main game together with local co-op. When the players separate across the level, the screen will either expand to show them, or they will die when dragged off screen. If one player enters a new area on the stage, then the other players will be teleported to them without losing a life.
It introduces a bubble mechanic for the multiplayer where if one character dies, they will appear back on the screen in a bubble that needs to be popped before they can rejoin the game. It is also possible to press a button and be placed inside of a bubble at any time without losing a life.
There are two dedicated multiplayer modes in the game; a Free-for-All Mode and a Coin battle. These modes rank the players by the objectives of that mode.
A new Super Guide system is in the game to assist players who die multiple times in the same level; this guide shows a 'ghost' who displays the correct path through the level.
