In a 40 hour campaign, the player is sent to defeat evil beings that live in the large sprawling mine network and in the ruins about the fortress city of Feste. It starts with a small group of mercenaries looking for work but they quickly get sucked into the world saving journey they embark on. Game Play
The combat in Natural Doctrine is turn-based and large battles between allies and enemies are common; in battle, time can be controlled dynamically and units can be controlled in a single area to attack a single enemy, a group of enemies , to move across the battlefield and even to hide behind objects. When in combat, units will be able to return to their camp at the end as long as their encampment has not been destroyed in the fight.
During a turn, every unit can be directed to immediately follow other allies by using a Link Turn; it is possible to link all the allied units together for one massive attack. During these large there is no saving and checkpoints in the game are not very common, large battles can take up to one hour to win. Friendly fire exists in Natural Doctrine and friendly NPC's can also harm or kill your units. The death of certain characters will give an instant game over, even if they are killed by friendly fire.
Players are able to move skill points mid-game to swap skills if needed. Magic in the game demands the use of Pluton which is a fictional element and it is required to cast spells; the element is a finite resource however and finding it can be difficult. Without Pluton mages cannot use magic.
There is a multiplayer mode where players can fight in a versus mode or play co-op together to fight for victory; the multiplayer mode is the only time that players can be a non-human species in the game.
