Monster Hunter User Reviews
Most of the game is amazing to be honest, while it does have several glaring flaws the good outshines the bad.
1. Taking down something big always makes you feel powerful.
2. You can spend 10 minutes just looking at the screen, admiring how cool you look in your armour.
3. Challenging quests.
4. Plenty of armours and weapons to choose from.
5. Many different weapon types such as guns, great swords, and lances.
Here are the bad parts of the game:
1. Spotty hit detection.
2. Your hunter is slow as hell.
3. Some monsters annoy you to the point of hurling your controller through your screen.
4. You CANNOT pause,AT ALL.
Monster Hunter is one of those games that is grossly underrated,, yet has a dedicated fan base that will probably never stop playing it. At first you start off as a total noob, with no armour whatsoever and a crappy sword. However that will soon change, when you fight newer monsters and get to carve off parts you unlock new armour and weapons, some of which look totally awesome and some which will shame you for life. Speaking of which, getting a full set of armour and equipping all the pieces at the same time will give you skills, some of which are crappy and some of which are useful like a...
Nearly everything I have to say. The graphics are pretty descent, and do a good job of bringing the wyverns to life. Gameplay is good, mainly because you feel invincible after slaying a massive wyvern over 50 times your size. The sound is pretty good too, because you know you're in trouble when a load roar bursts throughout the area you're in. Finally for the generic goodness, it has wonderful replay value. I've been playing since 2003 and it's 2007 currently. I've been online and off with over 17 characters and still haven't gotten every last piece of equipment. The bad:
Now for the bad, the graphics are good and pretty but that's about where it ends. It's the same japanese import-esque choppy graphics we all used to see on Cinematech at night. However they're still fairly good, better than most import translations. The gameplay can be frustrating at times too, as noted in my inability to obtain every piece of equipment. After four years playing on both offline and online modes, you begin to think you deserve more items than you get. Finally the controls take some time to get used to, almost enough for the average gamer to get fed up with. Also the beginning is quite slow, making you go through tedious learning missions before you ever see any real action.Summary:
Alright now that I've gotten the generic comments out of the way, on to the actual review. The game kind of tricks you when you go onto your first mission. You're treated to a small cinematic of this wonderful and beautiful landscape, streatching as far as the eye can see. Then when you try to go out there, you're stuck at the river's edge and can't even get your feet wet. However you still get to go to plenty of vibrant places, with graphics that are overdone in a good way. Forested areas look green and lush and have that grunge-esque feel of the dirt, soil, and tree you want it to have. W...
Above average graphics
Nice selection of enemies
Online is a blast
Offline is pretty good
Offline takes a while to pick up speed
No headset support
Sometimes camera can be a pain
Minigames aren't so imaginative
I have read many "Pro"-reviews, and I'm here to set the record straight. Many of them say that this game is unimaginative, and hasn't even scratched the surface of its potential. Well, you can plug up your ears with cotton and read this. One guy even said, and I quote, "...this game takes place in Prehistoric ages and you play as a miscellaneous cave person." Pfft, we all know that the Neanderthals had guns. It's so obvious.
When I first saw my friend playing this game, he was in the middle of a forest, collecting mushrooms. Boring, yes I agree. I got rather bored of him running around and ...
Cool control system
Cool use of teamwork
Lots of other stuff to do(cook, fish, gather, create items)
Lots of armor/weapon options
No headset support
Training missions are easy but take a long time
This game is one of a kind. Seriously. You start out with nothing but a sword and shield, then you talk to the villiage elder and go through hellishly boring training missions, which drain your interest in the game till you come close to selling it. Don't worry, it gets better...be patient. Then, save and exit out of the single player. NOW. (this is if you have an online connection) Go to online, set up an account, and get ready to see why this game was made. The controls are totally different than other games, so takes a bit to get used to it. I like it, some don't. Anyway, the core of thi...
This game's online play is incredible. Taking down a monster with a big weapon (Sword,Great Sword,Dual Swords,Hammer,Lance,Gun) made of the hides and claws of other slayed creatures with up to 3 other people is great. All the while being protected by armour which is again made of the carcasses of enemies past.
There is a great Town set up to trade items, talk tactics and show off your new equipment. There is even a market place, an armoury and a guest house where you get rewarded with posh luxury rooms for being a good hunter. The quests vary (with 3 choices; Hunting,Capturing or Gathering) and all the while building up to bigger opponents.
Controls are brilliantly simple leaving the concentration to avoid the monsters and also giving the game a more intelligent game than using super special moves.
Visually this game is stunning. The monsters look perfect, landscapes are incredible and when a fireball is hurtling passed you only inches from your head you cannot help but admire the way it looks so completely...right.
There is no restriction of choice either. If you start using a Great Sword and then decide you would like to give the Gun a go just make a gun and give it a go. There is no shortage of monsters to get materials from and money can always be earned by just doing quests or selling rare items.
However as brilliant as this is the game is not perfect.
The offline is weak. Without broadband and a network adapter this could very easily become really hard, tedious and one of those games that sits halfway up your stack of games never to be played again.
There are also a few problems with the gameplay. The camera occasionaly gets stuck when you are thrown at a wall causing only more pain and there is nothing more frustrating than stopping a dragon dead in its tracks AFTER it charges you.
This game is for the players linked up to the net. This game was designed as an online game and as such deserves to be treated as one. The offline play is only there as a necessity and it is is not until you hit the information highway that you appreciate this game's full potential.
It is exactly what you would expect from a game called Monster Hunter. There is freedom, there are big weapons and most importantly of all there are great big dragons waiting to be hunted.
