It's based on the near future and it involves getting into a War with the North Koreans and it's Leader General Choi Song. You get the opportunity to help out the Allies, South Koreans, it's rivals Chinese and my favorite The Russian Mafia to eliminate The NK Forces and they'll help you find General Song. You play as Three different Mercs from different countries, Sta...

The GTA knockoff that kicks GTA's ass

The good:

-Graphics
-Open-ended story system
-Freedom to choose your own path through the game
-Interesting "Deck of 52" system
-Pros and cons with every contract
-Weapons
-Vehicles
-Air strikes
-Very intelligent AI
-2 enormous maps to explore

Summary:

You've been sent to North Korea by ExOps with one mission: take the manic, nuclear weapon wielding General Song out. The pay? One hundred million dollars. Yes, you read that right. But it won't be easy to get to him. Song's most important associates have been assigned values in a deck of 52, with Song as the Ace of Spades. To get to Song, you have to gather enough intelligence by capturing or killing the majority of the deck. Of course, you're not on your own. Factions that have settled in NK for their own purposes could help you out by gathering intel and locations of the members of the De...

Very good game

Summary:

"You have unlocked the Bunker Buster bomb". Hmm, this sounds interesting. Arming myself with my new found explosive, I take aim at a large sky scraper. Hesitantly, I give the o.k for the air strike to be called in. Within seconds, it meets it's target. I am greeted by a pathetic explosion. "Is that it!?" I scream in anger. Just as I am about to throw my controller to the ground in anger, it happens. A small bubble forms at the explosion, dragging everything into it. Boxes, people, benches, nothing is spared! Then, without warning EVERYTHING in the nearby vicinity is decimated in a huge shoc...

Very addictive

The good:

Free roaming gameplay.
Three main characters each with distinctive styles.
Excellent Graphics.
The vehicle selection - Tanks, helicopter, cars.

The bad:

Vehicle handling not too good as compared to other driving games.
A sudden sharp rise in difficulty in the last mission.
Some repititiveness amoung missions.

Summary:

Difficulty - Moderate
First thing - if you're buying this game because you want something like Grand Theft Auto - DON'T. Barring a few similarities - this is a totally different game. If you want a war-game/FPS with free roaming you couldn't do much better than this.
Mercenaries puts you in the shoes of one of three mercenaries (you decide which of the three you play) dropped into wartorn North Korea - trying to avert a nuclear war.
You start off with a Carbine and some grenades and it's up to you to work your way up the ranks of the deposed North Korean Army (given code names after a deck of...

An Actual Shooting Game I Liked

The good:

- The Deck of 52.
- Three characters to choose from.
- Up to 30 real military weapons.
- A large selection of guns, vehicles, helicopters, and support.
- You can capture the enemy.
- Great graphics.
- Enemies do not have one type of weapon.
- Your radar can get jammed.
- The enemy isn't that stupid.

The bad:

- Gameplay is somewhat repetative.
- Huge amount of loading time.
- You cannot swim but yet your in the military.
- Air gets foggy when you go up to high in the air.

Summary:

The great graphics are awesome and you can choose what side to work for such as the Russian Mafia, China, South Korea, and Allies. I recommend this game because it was an actual shooting game I liked. Not recommended to people who toss the controller when they die or pansies.

Who says violence is bad?

The good:

Pretty much everything (more detailed description in 'Detailed Comments' section).

The bad:

There's no boats or planes to drive, and you can't swim.

Summary:

Overall, Mercenaries is a great game. The story is set in North Korea, not to far from now. As President Kim started leaning towards democracy, his son, Choi Song, killed him. Now General Song has the country's nuclear codes, and he's threatening to send the world into Armageddon! This is where you come in. You play as an merc (mercenary) of ExOps (Executive Operations), Sent into a war torn North Korea to capture the 52 most dangerous people in the world, sorted into a deck of playing cards based on importance (Club, diamond, heart, spade is the order of importance, Ace's high) and stop So...
