The Space Between

So the other day I had the entire house all to myself (my parents went away to San Francisco for the week, Jenny was out with her off-again/on-again boyfriend [and my best friend] Andy, and my wife went out shopping with her mother and our daughter and that can take hours). What did I do all day, you say? Well, not much. Kinda sucks just being around an empty house not having anyone to chat with. I went into the garage to un-pack some of the boxes, cos after 6 months now, I still had some boxes that still needed to be opened. Not like it was anything important... well other than a few old photo albums and some old high school/college stuff that belonged to me, my wife Patricia and tons of Jenny's stuff that she brought back from San Diego (who knew that girl still had tons of sh*t that she left in a storage room at her best friend’s house in National City. I began unpacking my box and right on top was my lettermen jacket (baseball & football) most of my patches and pins were from the good ol' glory days on the baseball diamond. A few newspaper clippings here & there and some old love letters from my ex-girlfriend (RIP).

Spaced out for about an hour or so on these things then I got a phone call from my Uncle Junior who sounded a wee bit happy for finally finishing his community hours and probation duties. "Finally ey!" he said and I could sense that he had drinking a few beers… but wow, at 11AM in the morning? Guess he had a blast the night before celebrating his "accomplishment". He mentioned that he was coming over with his girlfriend later that day just so he can see what my kiddo was up to and to say hello to his sister (my mother). So, as any typical Mexican would do, I took out the BBQ grill and went down to the local bodega owned by a really cool old Mexican couple. I bought about 10 lbs of carne asada and ordered a good amount of tri-tip to picked up later in the afternoon. I called Jenny to see if she could pick it up whenever she got back home and she said "cool, ok" Jenny was out in Hollywood with her boyfriend… doing what, well who knows? She's just like that. Heck, we are all like that, really. Her room phone kept ringing and ringing and ringing 'til I just had had enough of it, I went up to her room and unplugged the damn thing. Silence, all throughout the house. I grabbed a glass and poured myself a little Jack Daniels (on the rocks of course) began picking up all the toys Araceli had thrown on the floor. I put on a little Led Zeppelin, Beatles & The Police on the living room stereo and plugged in my guitar for a little while and followed along with the albums. Amazingly, I still remembered how to play "Heartbreakerz". It’s the only damn Zeppelin song that had given me problems in the past... sh*t, don’t know why either?

I blew off about 3 hours there and just as the stereo was playing "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" by the Police, I got a call from my wife saying that she was on her way home. I thought to myself "*bleep*! 'bout time! How much did you add on to the credit card bills?!" but I just said "cool, bring a case of beer cos Uncle Junior is coming over tonight." A few minutes later, she arrived along with the little heartbreaker herself but it looks like the Sandman had won the battle sometime between the trip to the supermarket and home. I heard her screaming and blabbing while my wife and I were on the phone just a few minutes before. I took her out of the car seat and took her upstairs to her room where my wife's niece Amanda (was on vacation so she spent the entire week with us, not much of a bother really other than her annoying knack to blast her NOW CDS on the living room stereo at times) had cleared some of the plush dolls that lied on my daughter’s bed. Took off her shoes, her sweater, placed the String Tribute to Radiohead's "OK Computer" on the cd player in her room, kissed her forehead and left the room. Amanda stayed in the room and took out her coloring books and started on a Disney theme coloring book I had bought her earlier in the week.

At 6PM, I started up the ol' grill and began cooking the carne asada while my wife began making salads, rice, beans, and other foods. Uncle Junior had arrived at 6:30PM with his girlfriend Sandra. Quite a nice woman, not the type of girl that Uncle Junior had dated before he went off to his "vacation" spot but, as they say, opposites attract. Jenny arrived a couple seconds after he arrived and I saw that she brought a few friends with her from college. I didn't mind them at all, the more the merrier I say. My neighbor was talking to me from his yard as I was cooking and I told him to come over. Mike, a surfer/skater type of guy, brought along a bottle of Cazadores just cos he didn't want to show up empty handed, Uncle Junior's favorite tequila... and I did see him run of to the kitchen to go get some shot glasses. Jenny was clearing the patio table my dad had bought a few months ago and she began loading it up with all the goodies my wife had been cooking. We all began eating at around 8PM and by that time, my little girl was up running around in the backyard playing around with Amanda with a cookie in her hand. Kept feeding it to our dog though so eventually, I had to put an end to her stops at the table were I had placed her cookies. My parents arrived at 9PM and we had all finished eating.

The ladies cleaned up while Mike, Uncle Junior, Andy, Carlos (Jenny's gay friend from college), my dad and a few of the fellas from my dad’s worked stopped by to play some poker with the old man. I opted out of that cos I didn’t feel like taking their money tonight. :P The rest of us went to the garage to play a few games of pool while the ladies were in the living room eating desserts & ice cream that Jenny had brought from a really good bakery in Santa Barbara... forgot the damn name of the bakery though, well who cares, all I know is that they have good stuff there, REALLY good stuff! I noticed my little girl was running on a sugar high cos my wife gave her a piece of flan and ice cream. Jenny gave her a few half-spoons of strawberry pie. Went back into the garage and saw that everyone had taken a shot of my dad's ol' tequila bottles. Those *bleep*ers didn’t even wait 'til I came back from the restroom! I took two shots just cos I felt like it. You know, for a gay dude, Carlos didn't act like it. Would’ve never known he was gay if I had seen him out in the street. One of the coolest peeps I've met this year. Always brings my little girl a plush doll… today he brought her a small Winnie the Pooh doll… FFS, what the hell are we gonna do with all those :bl33p:ing plush dolls?

Well, the pool match only lead to sh*t-talking on who can snipe who the hardest on Halo 2, so of course, we had to set-up a game. My wife had come into the garage just as I was about to snipe the living daylights out of my Uncle Junior and since he was teaming up with my friend Andy, he was going to get pwned too. I handed the controller over to Carlos since he was the biggest trash-talker anyways, and I heard say "Ugh *bleep*! Who snipped me?" My wife asked me where the wine bottle opener was and I had seen that two of her friends from work had arrived. Really cool peeps too… one of them was a teacher and the other was my wife's best friend. My wife doesn’t drink much… and wouldn’t want to anyways now that she's… well, I'll let you figure that out. I saw my baby girl rubbing her eyes a lot which, for a parent, that means it’s bedtime. I made her a bottle and I could here the guys in the garage yelling "Stop looking at my screen dude," "*bleep* you that's bullsh*t," "lol owned," and everyone’s favorite "who the *bleep* snipped me?" Picked up Araceli cos I could see that she was getting fussy seeing that I was playing around with her bottle, you know, just to get her a little more tired. I took her up upstairs and I sat on the rocking chair that her grandmother (my wife's mom) had given us. I put on the string tribute to Radiohead's Kid A album (yeah, that's right!) and I sang the lyrics as the strings played in the background. Took her a few minutes to fall asleep cos she stopped sucking on her bottle just as "How To Disappear Completely" had ended. Tucked her in, a quick kiss on the lips (I could taste the strawberry pie she had earlier), turned on the monitor, and closed the blinds. My wife walked in the room and hugged me. We stood there looking at Araceli sleep… it’s still one of the greatest feelings in my life. I kissed my wife… I could taste the flan on her lips.

Just another typical day.
