So I've decided to chronicle my opinions on modern consoles

Playstation 3

Honestly, if you buy a Playstation 3 purely for the reason of gaming then you are in fact *bleep*ed in some way.

The Playstation 3, is really just a cheap Media machine. The only reason I can see getting one is that it's a cheap blu-ray player. Other than that it's a shitty game console. You have MGS4 as the only exclusive and everything else is on the 360.

Really, I can see getting the PS3 if you're a rich *bleep* or want cheap Blu-Ray and VERY casual gaming. The fact that it's backwards compatible testifies to that though it's rumored Sony is taking that away.

Xbox 360

The 360 is really the console for old school gamers. If you're 17+ it's good stuff. It appeals to PC Gamers who want more casual gaming than the PC and those used to the controllers of the N64 and what not.

It emphasizes the basics of gameplay. First Person Shooters (with online), turn-based RPGs, classics on the arcade, and of course the next-gen sequels that the Wii just won't get. Add excellent online support and you get good stuff. It has a reasonably sized library to boot. Not every game is a keeper but there's always something to rent if you're bored or you could turn to a library the more experienced gamer has made for himself.

Nintendo Wii

The Nintendo Wii is in my opinion what could be called the Next-Gen Board Game. It's not really a video game console so to speak so much as it is something for the family.

You have the older download games for the new parents in their 20s who grew up on Super Mario World. The newer games that just seem to be crappy party games for the family and maybe kids and their friends.

Then all you have left are the maybe, 3 games a year that are actually games. Let's see, coming out we have Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, and SSBB. On those games, Galaxy just looks like a headache not a sequel to SM64. Walking around tiny chunks of rock in space doesn't take me back to the expansive worlds of SM64 just a headache. Brawl on the other hand just looks like an expansion to Melee. It doesn't really elaborate but just throws new stuff in which doesn't do it for me. MP3 actually looks to be the one thing Nintendo is doing right.

On the subject of WiFi, I don't trust it. The Nintendo DS was a tremendous failure with WiFi. Games would disconnect frequently and crap out. I expect the same for the Wii. Yes, Smash Bros is online so do enjoy your 5 seconds of play before Error 91101 pops up on you.

To it's credit, the Wii is a good investment for very young kids and the younger teens who love Ninty. Parents in their 20s/30s can get some quick entertainment off of it playing their childhood games or a little bonding time with their kid but a true gaming console it does not make.
