I'm conflicted. Part of me wants to write, but I also know that the likelihood of me being committed is minimal.

Hey, I was in the same boat about 15 months ago, I feel ya. Well, I'm still sort of on it but writing's left the crew since.

From my experience, your level of commitment depends on how far you want to go with this writer thing. Of course, commitment is necessary for any sort of writing, but you probably don't want to completely commit yourself to writing unless you're aiming for full-fledged, renowned author status. Part-time/casual writing requires less commitment, so you could write a book or something in your spare time. I write anything from short stories to novellas (one might qualify as a novel with some more pages) and everything in between, and there is no binding commitment, just voluntary commitment.

No need to fret, you were aiming for Socialist Despot, if memory serves.
