Left 4 Dead is a survival horror FPS game where players are put in the middle of an apocalyptic pandemic where they must fight to survive against the waves of Infected. It places a group of four playable characters at the start of an area with the aim of surviving until they can escape or be rescued.
It was developed by Valve and Turtle Rock Studios before it was first published by Valve in 2008 for the Xbox 360 and Windows PC. It was later released for the Mac in 2010.
A sequel to this was first released in 2009 by Valve. It was called Left 4 Dead 2 and was released for the Xbox 360, PC and Mac.
There are five different Campaigns in the game which each take place in various locations however the aim is still the same; they can be played solo with three AI teammates or with online co-op. The Xbox 360 version of the game also supports local co-op and features a split screen function.
On their route to escape, the group must kill the Infected that are in the way; most of the ones the player will see are the Common Infected. There are also Uncommon Infected which may be wearing some armor and also Special Infected which have unique abilities.
When a survivor loses their health they enter the incapacitated state and need to be revived by another survivor; this will cause them to stand back up but with a low amount of health. If this happens three times, then the survivor will die, and if this occurs in the Campaign, then the player will spawn inside a closet but need to be rescued by their team to rejoin the game.
Players can use various firearms which can be collected during the campaign; each survivor starts with a simple semi-automatic pistol with unlimited ammo. Progressing through the game will cause more weapons to become available to players, the player can only hold one other main weapon at a time. First aid kits, pipe bombs, molotov cocktails and pain pills can also be carried by each survivor and used to help the group.
Away from the campaign modes, there are two other game modes: Survival and Versus. Survival pits players against waves of Infected with the aim for surviving for as long as possible. The Versus mode is a multiplayer PvP mode where one team play as humans and the other can play as four different Special Infected; one team needs to make it to the safe zone, and the other must stop them.
