[edit] Background

Hotline Miami is an action game developed by Dennaton Games and published by Devolver Digital released in 2012 for PC, later receiving ports for PS3, PS Vita and PS4, and also OS X and Linux. It received Android support in 2015. The game follows the protagonist, Jacket, as he receives several calls commanding him to commit mass murders against the Russian Mafia in multiple instances.

[edit] Game Play

Hotline Miami is a 2D top down action game in which there are 20 chapters, many of which are separated into numerous stages. Most chapters begin with the protagonist, Jacket, receiving a cryptic phone call in his home, telling him to perform a task at a certain location, each call a euphemism for murdering everyone at that location. Then the player may choose a mask for Jacket to wear for the chapter, each one providing a certain perk or bonus. More masks are unlocked as the game continues and some can be found in select areas of chapters.

Jacket must then traverse the building, making sure to kill everyone he encounters, however, Jacket is just as vulnerable as the enemy, leaving a tiny margin for error, meaning that the player must learn from their mistakes in order to complete the task.

Points are collected based on a number of factors, such as Killings, Boldness, Combos, Time, Flexibility and Mobility. These factors garner points based on how the player has navigated the level. At the end of each chapter, these points are tallied and the player is given a grade ranging from F to A+. Gaining higher scores will unlock more weapons and masks for the player to use.
