The next installment of Bungie's legendary Halo series, Halo 4 is the seventh game in the franchise and marks the start of a new trilogy developed by 343 Industries. Four years after the events of Halo 3, Master Chief is awakened by Cortana aboard the Forward Unto Dawn to face an entirely new threat.
Even after humanity's victory against the Covenant, hostile remnants of the alien coalition still linger, and the Prometheans -- constructs created by the Forerunners -- present an even greater danger. Soon, the Forerunner warrior known as the Didact is awakened, and he seeks nothing short of enslaving all of humanity to create his new Promethean army. To make matters worse, Chief must race against time in an effort to save Cortana from descending into rampancy, a condition that afflicts and kills AI who live past expiration.
Halo 4 features both a campaign mode and online multiplayer. The campaign, or story, is playable both in single-player and through co-op on multiple difficulties. All players in the campaign will play as Master Chief, rather than be assigned as other Spartans or Elites.
The Halo 4 multiplayer has been named "Infinity," featuring customizable Spartan IVs and rank progression. Cosmetic options, new weapons and abilities, as well as various upgrades are unlocked as the player goes up in rank; once achieving SR-50, players then choose a Specialization, and then continue unlocking further upgrades and cosmetic elements. The competitive aspect of multiplayer is named "War Games," and supports up to 16 players across numerous match types. "Spartan Ops" is the new Firefight, focused on defending against waves of enemy AI with other players or solo.
Forge mode also returns, allowing players to customize their own multiplayer maps.
