Freelancer User Reviews
Freelancer is a space trader and combat simulation game made in 2003 for the PC by Microsoft. The game is a sequel, which leads on from the events (800 years later) of Starlancer that came out in 2000.
Edison Trent, a Freelancer in Sirius due to an attack on the Freeport he was staying on, has ended up in Liberty with no money and nowhere to go. Luckily for him, on plant Manhattan he meets a female from the LSF (Liberty Security Force) who offers him the most basic ship available with a small amount of money. You then start taking missions but things go from bad to worst in Sirius and you fi...
almost every aspect of this game is perfect, most notably the graphics, combat and the amount of freedom that this game gives you.The bad:
missions get a little repetative after a while, as does the dialogue. thats about it...Summary:
even as an avid gamer on PC, Xbox and PS2, i have NEVER seen a game this well written for its genre. the freedom and mobility that the game allows you is utterly mind blowing. i'll just start with the good stuff to review:
Graphics: DEFNITELY one of the games strongest points. very pretty and flowing graphics, especially on the PC (i haven't seen hardy any PC games with graphics as good as these).
Gameplay: the controls are incredibly easy to pick up and use. you can litterally play the game with just a few key strokes, and little or no mouse intervention (except during combat).
the combat an...
uh...EVERYTHING! ie: Graphics rule, gameplay/replayability awesome, animation is sweet, plus the fact you can go wherever you want after a few missions. And it has multiplayer! If you have played "Frontier" you NEED to get this game! The bad:
the game needs more ship types, a truckin' fan like me longs to take the helm of a freighter with a cargo hold greater greater than 300 spaces. Also lacks the feature to fly battleships... ok well maybe that would be too much too program, but hey i'm a greedy player lolSummary:
Go anywhere, do anything, blow up almost anything, mercenaries apply here! If you have played "Frontier" you NEED to get this game! Ps.: while playing, write notes to remind yourself to eat/sleep/etc... or you will forget, in other words total immertion! Find a comfortable chair!
Relativly good graphics and excellent gameplay and (in my opinion) great multiplayerThe bad:
hmmm...not much, perhaps some more diversity in the missions like being able to transport people etc...Summary:
I remember a few years ago I tried a game on my friends mac which sent me on a several year hunt of dissapointent trying to find something that compared to it. The game was escape velocity. Now, after years of dissapointment i have finally found something for the PC...Freelancer. This game allows the player to play a number of roles ranging from cop to pirate to trader to smuggler, all of which have different challenged and rewards. Good single player can keep u mesmorised for hours or even days. But once u try the mulitplayer then the single player game, even with its good story, and ...
Flowing storyline, but it doesn't bind you too tightly. Allows for some freedom and personalisation, and then drags you back when it needs to.
Only being able to own one ship at a time, Not being able to set waypoints for cross system voyages. The Navmap could be abit more informative and detailed.
A nicely packaged game. Looks good, sounds good. The cockpit chatter that goes on in the background is not too intrusive, and can be informative if used properly. Graphics were abit laggy at times in heavy combat on my GF2 GTS Pro, but most of the time were nice and smooth.
Combat controls are intuitive, and easily reached, allowing the player to concentrate more on the next Corsair, and less on where the Shield Battery button is. Was abit surprised at first that it wasn't joystick controlled, but quickly came to understand why: With mouse lock off, the joystick just wouldn't match the mouse...
Great graphics, sound and diversity of play makes for hours of fun.The bad:
Multiplayer lacks depth to a degree that makes it playable for only so longSummary:
Worth a buy if you are looking for something new. Piloting ships is very easily done, gameplay is very smooth and graphics are nice. Network usage is very minimal, but broadband users will definitely see an advantage over dial-up users.
