Subject: DOESN'T SAVE

every time i quit and load the game, its goes to the bit before you meet the giant bear. i thought this was usual so i went on an eventually went to the second level. i quit it to go and eat and it went all the way back.
THIS IS SO ANNOYING BECAUSE I SPEND AGES ON IT
anyone know how to save?
i installed patch 1.1 and thats the only difference its had since it used to work. is that the problem?
