Yeah, so I got bored searching for the White SeeD Ship and decided to explore the world map. I came across a weird crater not far from Trabia Garden... If you try to run near it with Squall, nothing happens, but you can hover over it in the Garden, and the pilot guy make some comment that I wish I cold remember.

Anyway, if you know what on earth I'm rambling about at this point... Can anybody tell me what it's for or what you're meant to do? Or is it just some random thing set up to confuse stupid people like myself?

Yeah, I remember tat place.

Wat is it? It's a large hole in the Earth (or tat Planet).

No, it has nothing to do with FF7, just in case ya wanna cook up some off-shoot theory. God knows we got plenty of those here.

It's the missile strike that missed the garden if I'm not mistaken. Also, an excuse to stop the garden from proceeding

Yep, that's right.

It's not part of a sidequest or something, so you can do nothing about it.

The thing is, even if the crater wasn't there, you still would not be able to go to Esthar as it's blocked by the mountains. You would just be able to see it from distance.

Actually, and I don't remember exactly where but on disc 3, they mention that the lunar cry 17 years ago happened in the valley near Trabia and wiped out the city that was there before. The missiles you redirect are the ones aimed at Balamb, by then the Trabia missiles have already launched. But since Balamb flies away it doesn't really matter that you reprogrammed them..

I thought the Lunar Cry happened on Centra.

Yes, it did happen on Centra.

Also, like HF said, it must be the missiles that missed Trabia Garden (ie the ones that were launched first, when Selphie said "That was a miss, right?" on the way to the missile base), not the ones that hit it.

However, I'm still not 100% certain whether it was caused by the missiles or nor.

I don't think the missiles made it. When you go near it when you're in the Garden, something weird happens, from what Nida says. I had a think about it when it happened to me and I remembered that Selphie says that she found a GF once in Trabia. I thought that this was the place. Because she never actually says which GF she found.

Well, what Nida says is "Huh? The gauge is going berserk!". I don't know what he refers to, but imo there are two strong possibilities: Lunar Cry and Galbadian missiles. And since I haven't noticed anyone talk about lunar cry on Trabia, I thought it was the latter.

Anyway, I do remember what Selphie said about that GF and I'm still kinda curious. I guess it could be that place, but it seems a little farfetched.

The lunar cry happened in Centra 100 years ago according to a member of the lunar base, thats why the centra continent is one huge crater, also the lunatic pandora was excavated there. Thinking about it there was a city there, was the lunatic pandora used as a weapon to destroy that city 100 years ago? Or was the pandora created by that city and did something go wrong? The missiles definately hit trabia, just look at the state of the place, and only 2 sets of missiles were fired from the base before it self detonated. So the crater in trabia is still very much unexplaned!! Any other theories?

I'm not 100% sure on how many sets of missiles were fired. I need to replay the Missile Base part, it seems. But I'm guessing there might've been more missile launchings than the characters actually witnessed.

There's no proof whatsoever for that, at least in the game. If you got a link to the whole story, it would be interesting to read.

By the way, making a brief online search, I found the following in a FF8-related forum and I think it's a quite good theory:

quote
The Trabia crater was caused by Esthar testing the Lunatic Pandora and creating an artificial Lunar Cry. In one of the Laguna flashbacks he's in Trabia Canyon, and you can see the Lunatic Pandora in the background right were the crater eventually will be.
I really need to replay that part. If the guy's right, then he's got amazing observation skills.

is that in the dream or is it in the part where you talk to laguna when he is president and he gives you that whole speech. because it seems vaguely familiar. and it would make sense as to why you have dreams in trabia canyon but can not go there as squall. and no i dont think selphie finding the gf has anything to do with it because she says she found it inside a monster she killed xx

The Trabia Canyon dream sequence is the one where Laguna is an actor, Kiros dresses up as a dragon and they get to fight the real Ruby Dragon.

In fact, the Trabia Canyon location is accessible with the regular party as well. You take the Ragnarok to the mountains that separate Trabia from Mordred Plains (Vienne Mountains is the name, I think). That is obviously south of the crater.

If you look closely, there is a passage through the mountains that connects Trabia with Mordred Plains. If you enter that, you're in the Trabia Canyon location. Nothing special is in there, though.

I agree that the Selphie GF idea is a bit farfetched.
