...I don't even like Oasis. Anyways, it's past time for another quarterly review of the sounds we've been dumping into our ears of late, in the process making a handy reference point come awards season.

Feel free to expand on the categories listed.

Mayer Hawthorne & Jake One laying down some soulid (see what I did there) gold for a quarter-hour of power. Here’s hoping a long-play of some description is in the works.

Albums in general. Justin, Tyler, Toro and Kavinsky had a decent stab but no fireworks in 2013 for me yet (I’ll see if I can convert myself to James Blake tomorrow).

EricF, I've been meaning to check out some more of The Strokes and indeed QOTSA for a while. So far I have First Impressions Of Earth by the former, and Songs For The Deaf and Lullabies To Paralyse by the latter. Any advice on anything else that matches the quality of those?

Not too much I can say about Q1 except that it was dominated by my repeated listening to The Afterman: Descension album by Coheed And Cambria, possibly their best release to date. Gravity's Union is my particular favourite out of a brilliant bunch of songs. Still need to listen to the new Steven Wilson album, as I haven't had time yet, but I'm looking forward to the new Sigur Ros and Jimmy Eat World albums in June. Oh, and best gig? Sigur Ros last month - life changing!

Tiny Glowing Screens Part 2 – Watsky

The 20/20 Experience – Justin Timberlake

There's been a lot of albums of around the same quite high quality released this year. I've enjoyed all the albums containing the songs above, and that#s not to mention My Bloody Valentine, Villagers or Foxygen. Or Rhye, Local Natives and Foals as much as they deserve.

This album is just typical JT fare, pushing the boundaries of pop and R&B to stretching point. Timberland is back on top with his producing, amalgamating big band, hip-hop and pop seamlessly and a lot more of a settled, mature lyrical content that suits Timberlake.

-----------------
MOST DISAPPOINTING RELEASE
-----------------

This Town Needs Guns, 13.0.0.0.0 was pretty woeful, but I wasn't really expecting much after their break-up. I don't know where they picked up their new singer, but he's managed to change the band from decent math rock to a bad Two Door Cinema Club

I haven't been really disappointed by many albums this quarter, but honourable mention goes to Atoms For Peace. I liked the album, but I was expecting a lot more from them. May has well be a new Thom Yorke album

Most Dissapointing Release
Kavinsky's album was more an EP compilation than an album, Pacific Coast Highway wasn't on it. Blu's NoYork got an official release minus the Madlib tracks and the Edan joint, oops.

Run The Jewels is El-P and Killer Mike as a group, album due "Juneteenth".
Cage and Mighty Mi's Kill The Architect is now a full length album not an EP, should excuse the wait.

For QOTSA, I rate the albums:

Songs For The Deaf > Queens of the Stone Age > Lullabies to Paralyse > Rated R > Era Vulgaris.

But Rated R is still an excellent excellent album and definitely worth your time.

And Strokes albums have basically been declining in quality as they're released, so you have to go back to Is This It? and Room On Fire if you want to actually listen to them! I wouldn't bother with the rest.

Saeglopur, Room on Fire and Is This It? are both better albums than First Impressions, though the latter is really good. As Matty said, I'd say start from the beginning. Like Interpol, they've gradually gotten a little bit worse with each release.

Lullabies is my favourite QOTSA album, but Rated R is a great one if you don't know it. Also, don't disregard Era Vulgaris. Not many people seem to like it but I think it's very good as a whole.

I literally hate everything about this album, from the cover artwork to "Lysandre's Theme" that weaves its way through nearly every song, if I remember correctly. So cheesy and such a cheap effect for what he was going for. :[

I'm sure i hit out with this around about this time every year but i've listened to very little new music this year.

I like the 20/20 Experience very much, and also Holy Fire. Made To Stray by Mount Kimbie is a solid track, makes me excited for their new album out end of may. Daft Punk, too. IFHY is a cool video.

Got so much to catch up on. I've been sleeping on Tuxedo in particular.
