Currently around the 23,000 coin mark.
Took a small break from the story part of the game and played Coin Rush. It's pretty really addicting.

Coin rush is great. Personally I like playing it as Mario while invincible, allows more focus to be put on the coins and not getting it.
I (We) have around 30,000 coins total. Of course, this is a conjoined effort between my brother, Fluidity, and myself.

As of Monday, I've read that the Worldwide total coin amount is over 36 billion. That's pretty impressive.

This was on a busy day too, I was barely even home! Coin rush gets you TONS of coins fast. And now it's 70,000 btw. :3

I haven't played Coin Rush yet. On 11,645 coins entering World 5-4.
