OK, I have a question that concerns the FAQ page on how to become a moderator.

If you go and read the FAQ page, notably the section on how to become a moderator, it still says that members are handpicked by the administration, even though the applications process is back in force again. Should someone update the FAQ page?

You would be right I believe, somebody with proper permissions should be getting to that soonTM. Thanks for bringing that up.

can we recommend someone to be a mod?

Hey there Lazzara.

No, not really. You can recommend that they apply to become a moderator though and we'll review them for the spot. We're not taking recommendations from others though. Sorry!

Take care.

Is the 300 word limit a hard limit, strictly enforced? Or is it simply a recommendation/guideline?

Hi The Writer.

It is a strongly suggested guideline, although we're not going to run applications through a word count and reject people for writing 301 words or anything like that. I think leeway of 10% would be reasonable, so anything more than 330 is likely too much. If it's noticeably over the word count by some margin we may just elect not to read it at all.

The guideline is there as it indicates to you the rough length of statement that we're willing and able to read due to the number of applications we sometimes have to go through. Applicants would do well to stay within these approximate boundaries.

Hope this helps. Take care.

Hi Sigma, these are good questions.

It is not a hard set requirement, just strongly suggested. It is hoped that if the forum you're interested in moderating doesn't meet the requirements that you attempt to build the community up by sharing links to the board with your friends, putting it in your signature, creating lots of new and interesting topics that people can participate in, etc. so that it receives more attention. Many have successfully built communities up and later applied to lead them using these methods.

You raise an interesting point about the actual status of the game the forum belongs to. We often take a good look at release dates when evaluating boards to see if they're likely to pick up in future and could use a moderator in place before they come out. In some cases, if someone applies to moderate and we see the forum has low PPD at the moment but is due for release in a couple of months we will delay our decision on the application for several weeks, setting a defined "review date" where we re-visit the board and see what candidates who have applied have done there in the meantime. If we see that they're still active and really trying to build a community there they will likely earn promotion.

I hope that gives you further insight into our review process.

Cheers!
- Tiffany

If we apply, can we apply for more than one forum at once?
There's no real limit to the number of requests you can submit as I covered earlier. Ideally, you'd submit separate requests for each forum you're interested in moderating though rather than lumping them all in the same post as that's more convenient for us.

Do note my guideline of limiting your requests to around 1-2 applications in a short space of time (1 month) though as anything exceeding that may suggest to us you're not really fully interested in the boards you're applying to moderate and you're just hopping around to try and get a moderator tag!

Thanks.

Dynamite

You've probably been asked this before, but what if the forum you're applying for doesn't have it's own mod but has a section mod? Could you still apply?

I know this probably counts as a double post, but I wasn't sure if you'd get another notification, Dynamite.

Would forums with only Category Mods be eligible?

Yes, they are eligible. It's the same kind of deal as the section mod question you asked. We're only listed as the mod there as there's no local mod or section mod. Just make sure the forum you are applying for is active enough before sending in an application though.
