Subject: Class Help for Newbie -------------------------------------------
So I just got this game and I'm a level 18 Fighter (who only has 5 ranks of my vocation filled for some reason...do I need to learn more things to open up higher ranks or just levels?)
But the main question is what class would you recommend for a melee class? My fighter dies a LOT and even bandits are whooping me just outside the capital. I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong but I find myself broke with crap gear save for the DLC sword/shield. It seems that everyone is leaning towards Assassins but everyone recommends going through Fighter/Warrior first. How do you survive the grind to that point as it's quite frustrating to die over and over. Any tips for a newbie?

This game can get very hard and you never know why. There is no level cap for region so you can go somewhere and the enemies be tons higher levels than the ones before them. What you need to do is just stay in areas that you know you can survive and level up and make some money, also get some good pawns that can heal you and compliment your team. Do sidequests from the notice boards and keep going at it until you get a good level and good money. Sometimes it can get really tough but you just need to keep going for it.
I just recently switch to a fighter and I think it can be a pretty good class even though ti is pretty basic. Work on getting some augments and some good skills that help you balance blocking and going full force. If you need to go and just keep practicing on some goblins or something. Bandits can be really hard at times so you will need to be pretty tough.

You just have to keep going.
I remember when I first started, that mugger bandit that waited for you just after the arch from Gran Soren, he killed me so much it was ridiculous!
If you need some extra help, add someone from the Pawn Roster forum and hire their pawn (hired pawns from friends cost 0RC) but they do take down your earnt exp.

don't hire overlevelled pawns. They just aren't worth it. You can either hire an OP pawn now and avoid 5-10 minutes of grinding or you can stay with your level range and avoid the 1-2 hours of grinding you would have to do in later game.

I'm currently playing assassin and it's by far the most useful of the classes. it gives you both good up close combat and good ranged attacks. you can still use powerful swords and shields if thats your preferred playstyle but it opens up the double jump move allowing you to jump higher and even survive long falls if you time it right.
you don't feel like fighting? hit the cloak button and walk right past them or run up to them predator style and gut them like pigs. it's a great class. just hire tank pawns to take the beating while you use hit and run tactics. assassins have tons of useful perks that give you more options than just running in and just slashing away which will get you killed early and often in the beginning and ALWAYS have a mage in the group as they act as a traveling health store while still bringing a good punch to the fight. i haven't had to carry alot of health stuff for the first 2 acts. just my 2 cents

It all comes down to what class you find best. Personally, I'm best with the Sorcerer class (I can kill things far faster with it than anything else, and clear entire rooms without help).
The Magic Archer is pretty good (leveling its vocation ATM). I like it more than the strider anyhow. People swear by the ranger for those that want a class that's very powerful.
Speaking of vocation increases, I think it is its own EXP. I don't think you can see precisely how close it is to going up, but I think it's like regular EXP in the sense that the more powerful the enemy, the more EXP. You don't even have to do anything either, to increase it (you gain EXP in general just for having your pawns kill things. It applies to both levels and vocations).
I wonder though, if using skills (on valid targets) provides a bit of vocation EXP as well?
It's pretty slow going in the latter half of your vocation in any case.

On the other hand, if you're going to hire an overleveled pawn, just don't hire two outside pawns. It wont soak up more than 100exp per mob that way and you aren't losing more exp then you would with a full group.

Would it be easier as a strider/assassin? Being a main tank is sucking with crap gear and no money

Does getting a higher leveled pawn really take that much xp? I was thinking getting one like 3-5 levels higher that will level with me as the extra pawns doesn't seem to level with your main and your main pawn.

Is there anything special augment or skills wise you picked up before you jumped to Assassin? I was debating between switching between that or the strider as I figured a dual wielder that can get in and out to do DPS without having to take on the brunt of the enemies via tanking may help my survivability.

I actually started off with the strider class and leveled up all her skills and augments before switching over to assassin ( didn't know I could switch vocations at the time). I really can't say which strider skills are the most useful as it really depends on your playstyle, but I'm a big dagger fan and one of my favorite dagger skills is the cutting wind fully leveled up which allows you to sprint in and out of combat delivering quick blows without taking much if any damage.
another is the skill that allows you to stab the enemy with poisoned daggers and cut him right down the middle. You can spam this one over and over to easily take out most foes and it works well with the cutting wind to get you in upclose, deliver the blow and out. I can't remember the name but just look for the dagger skill that has poison. word of caution, this can be blocked so it's best to dash in with cutting wind and gut them from behind.
one of my new favs is the upgraded back kick which unlike the previous dagger skill cannot be blocked, at least I haven't ran into an regular enemy that has blocked it. when used in tandem with the other skills you are death to all others, EXCEPT big boys which should be obvious
one last skill I'd pick up for big boys is the dire gouge for the sword as it allows you to repeatedly deliver massive blows to enemies you are clinging to. as an assassin you can carry your sword with you and pull it out for the big boys, which it's a great thing to take down chimeras, cyclopes, hell everything big except drakes. drakes still give me and my team trouble but they aren't around that frequently. this skill REALLY helps if you like putting yourself in harms way.
bows are extremely important in taking down drakes, dragons and all flying creatures for that matter. why run into the thick of things when you can power shot them from a safe distance? nothing worse to have to wait until they decide to come down or seeing them fly off never to return AFTER you almost have them beat. get good bows and pick up the skill that allows full powered shots, don't remember the name but just check the skill description.
one last thing, don't worry about overleveled pawns lowering your exp, you'll make that up ten fold just by playing and taking on side quest. my first playthrough i hired pawns that were 5 levels ahead so I wouldn't have to keep switching up pawns. they have more info and are a huge help over pawns your same level. get rid of any pawns that are lower, they will make fights really hard and often get you killed.
the exception would be if your on your ng+, then it really doesn't affect you as much since you'll be a beast by then. I'm level 67 my main pawn is a fully leveled ranger and I'm rolling with 2 support pawns, a 56 warrior that has 1815 offensive power(extremely high) and a 57 mage with about 1100 offensive power and believe it or not they have better stats then pawns my level or higher. don't know how that happens but they get the job done. pawn stats, skills, and augments are VERY important to your group, make sure they have what you need to be a full force.
hope that bit of dribble helps!

Actually that helped a lot! Since I'm a rank 5/level 18 fighter, would it be better to just grind out the last xx levels to rank 10 or would switching to strider now be better?

Do you know what exactly is needed to get higher ranks for a vocation? Is it kills, questing, etc? I noticed when looking at others my levels, it's random from 5 ranks to 7 even though they are the same level.

I'd switch asap. while I do have tons of high level armor for defense i don't even use it. I prefer sports cars over suv's, meaning you don't need tons of defence if no one can catch you. I'd rather have a bow than a shield and you have more choices for your primary.
The units you use to level up your fighter could be used to level up your assassin. You can always go back and finish up fighter if you feel it works better for your playstyle and it won't take long since you've already started.
As an assassin use focused speed attacks and HP and defence will be of no concern for you. again, you are not playing as a tank so your advantage is speed. I usually roll with about 3 or 4 hundred worth of defensive equipment which keeps me light yet still provide good protection against most enemies. (note) your tank should have the HIGHEST defense you can find as they will take a beating.
I tried having a fighter in the group but warriors seem more effective if you're looking for a tank with hard hitting offensive. I'm a sports guy, and a great offense is the best defense. works in sports, works in games. try to always find and upgrade your weapons first. i think as long as your defense is above 300 you should be fine, as long as you aren't trying to run in like a tank. my dragon forged daggers are at like 775 and my bow is at 717 or something like that and me and my team wipes out everything within seconds, minus dragons, drakes and hydras which are rare anyway.
If health is still a concern for you try adding a mage into the group who has curitive powers as well as attacks. buy a ton of empty flasks and head to the healing spring and stock up on spring water as it heals you and your team. as long as you keep an eye on your health bar and heal b4 you die HP will be of little concern. I haven't died a single time since i started doing this and I've dropped my defense to about 280 just to have a challenge. if your playing on a ps3 I'll send you some upgraded daggers/bows I have laying around as I'm a pack rat and have many just stocked up. I use to give them to support pawns, but they like jumping off cliffs way too much for my liking and it's just a waste of a good weapon. again, hope this helps

Thanks for the input!! Do you think being a strider is needed or just jump right into Assassin? Unfortunately I'm on xbox I only have store bought armor/weapons, I don't think I'm doing too hot in finding the actual good gear.
