Subject: DS Lite Version Freezes Upon Entering Battle Mode

I have a legal version of the game, NOT A ROM, for my DS Lite. I've played through it a couple of times with no problems but now, with this new game, it always freezes when I get into a battle with a wild pokemon or trainer. I did some save scumming to get to Mr. Pokemon's house but I can't get past the rival because the game freezes. The music freezes too, it gets stuck on the last note. Is it possible to fix this?
