NTSC name: Fatal Frame
PAL name: Project Zero

Since this game is for Wii, I imagine there will be quite a few people who haven't played the previous Fatal Frame games that were on PS2 and XBox.
So Gametrailers have previewed the game, to give a rundown of what you can expect. IGN has also given a brief run-down of the series for people who aren't familiar with it.

(Newcomers to the series can also use this thread to ask any questions that they might have about the Fatal Frame games)

:ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FATAL FRAME IV:

Are you brave enough to dive into the latest installment of the Fatal Frame series?

quote
:ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE FATAL FRAME IV SERIES

Created by Tecmo and Grasshopper (Suda 51), Fatal Frame IV is the fourth installment in one of the most popular survival-horror series.

Ten years ago, five girls were abducted and held hostage at a supposedly haunted mansion on Rougetsu Island. Detective Choushiro Kirishima stumbled upon the girls while investigating a string of murders that had happened on the island, and rescued them. Mysteriously, none of the girls could remember the events of their kidnapping.

Years after the incident, two of the girls (Marie Shinomiya and Tomoe Nanamura) were found dead in their homes with terrified expressions on their faces. The reason for their deaths were unknown.
The three girls who survived (Ruka, Misaki and Madoka) set out to Rougetsu Island in an attempt to unravel the mystery of their friend's deaths and remember what happened on the night of their kidnapping.

Choushirou Kirishima, who had since retired as a detective, also headed off to the island to retrieve the girls before anything terrible happened to them again, though what he finds there will haunt him forever ...

character info

If you don't know the Fatal Frame series yet, it's time to brush up on what is hands-down one of the most intense and horrifying game franchises out there.

Setting: Based in Japan, each Fatal Frame game has worked within its own self-containing story, always focusing on some sort of haunted house or village, and usually centered around some basic Japanese horror mythology.
In fact, the first game, released first on PS2 and later on Xbox, is actually based on a real haunted mansion outside of Tokyo, Japan. This haunted mansion has reportedly seen seven confirmed murders, and strange tunnels lead from the mansion itself to a few neighboring houses as well. Even now, people are scared to go onto the estate, as constant ghost sightings and peculiar events continue to happen on the premises.
The following two games were based on other areas (one a ghost town of sorts, rather than the token "haunted mansion" design), but always kept the same core design.

Gameplay: Since you're constantly running from ghosts, and since ghosts aren't exactly scared of melee or projectile weapons, Fatal Frame – as the name suggests – equips you with a unique soul-capturing camera. Known as the Camera Obscura, Fatal Frame's only weapon forces you to risk life and limb to get the perfect shot of advancing ghosts. While the main game is done primarily in third person view, you'll need to bring the aging camera up into first-person mode, and then focus in your shots face-to-face with the ghouls themselves. Based on how well the shot is executed (size of ghost, position of ghost in the frame, and action the ghost is doing at the time), a certain amount of damage is done. Put yourself out on the line even further, and capture a "Fatal Frame" shot seconds before the enemy attacks.

So why should you, a newcomer to the series and happy Wii owner, care about Fatal Frame? Well for one, a well made Fatal Frame on Nintendo's system could mean the scariest horror game of this generation is now on what is considered to be a "casuals only" console. The game is out to scare you, and as such there are tons of horrific images, extremely uncomfortable scenarios, and extremely moody worlds.
It'll be a "Mature" rated game without question. Fatal Frame will also bring a level of depth and maturity we don't normally see on Wii, as the stories are usually about double the length of a standard Resident Evil game, and feature tons of upgrade items, side quests, and backstory for those looking for a fully realized world.

As long as Suda and the gang put as much effort into Fatal Frame 4 as they did its predecessors, you'll be playing one of the best looking games on the system to date.

If anyone is iffy about the camera idea, then I'd suggest watching the video (above) to get an idea of how it works. You might not believe it, but the camera as a weapon really does work out well. - It creates a very interesting (and terrifying) gaming experience. Especially in a series that revolves around the type of horror that Fatal Frame does.
I'd say give it a go! (because not enough people do).

Do any veterans of the series have something to add to that?
Do any newbies to the series have any questions to ask?

(If you are interested in buying any of the Fatal Frame/Project Zero games, they are selling fairly cheaply on ebay (usa) / ebay (uk) and Amazon (usa) / Amazon (uk).)

Sounds extremely awesome. The innovative way of playing the game using a camera as your weapon should be amplified with the Wii-Remote.

Good find GG,they really shouldn't have compared it to Pokemon Snap though. xD
I'm looking forward to this; I hope the game setting will be more like the Himuro Mansion in FFI to be honest.
I never knew FF was based on real events though..I'd love to go to Japan and check out the house. xD

I enjoyed III,but the stealth sections were pretty pointless.
You can't exactly hide from a ghost..

I have heard positive things about this series. I can't say I have ever played the games, but it looks great an d I will most likely get it when I get a Nintendo Wii. I don't play many horror games, so this should be a...err.. nice... treat.

Aw drat, I came here all excited to play some horrific game only to find out it's for the Wii . Is Fatal Frame 4 coming out for any other consoles, let's say Xbox 360 perchance so that I may get my grubby little paws on it?

The other Fatal Frame games are all for PS2, Empress. So you might be able to get a hold of those ones.

Yeah, FFIII is the only one that takes place in the character's dreams. Though those dreams do end up getting mixed with reality about halfway through the game, and ghosts start appearing in both reality and the "dream world". (the shower scene was creepy as hell. Totally unexpected!)

Is it worth me looking into the previous games? Or are they all incredibly rare and sillily priced due to me never seeing them before ?

But this looks very interesting, especially with the Wiimote(it might give me a reason to actually want to play the Wii). I'll be sure to pick it up if it still looks good by launch.

I got a couple q's: is the game extremely hard? And is it a game based primarily on 'jump' scenes or is it actually scary? I hate horror films that are build completely on jumps; it's not scary, I know when every jump is gunna come!

Thanks for the help : D

If you find a copy of any of the Fatal Frame games, you should pick them up.You won't regret it.
You can probably pick them up second hand,if you live in Britain; check out GAME and Gamestation.
The series is Uber scary, you never know when a ghost might appear, some literally appear in your face without warning.
The jump moments are always unexpected.
Especially in Fatal Frame I.
