Here's an interesting blog post from Bill Murphy of MMORPG.com: The Mists of Pandaria & Guild Wars 2 Battle:
quote BillMurphy - MMORPG.com
So, as you've probably heard a thousand times across the internet already, World of Warcraft's Mists of Pandaria is launching everywhere on September 25th of 2012. Immediately apparent is the fact that this is exactly a month after the pre-purchase access for ArenaNet's Guild Wars 2.

Surprise! Game Company B bases its release schedule on Game Company A!

We've seen this before, and we'll keep seeing it after. It's the same thing Hollywood does with movie releases. You don't want to compete directly if you can avoid it, and Blizzard obviously knows that people will buy GW2, and don't want to risk losing potential day-one adopters by launching too close to that game. But will MoP's launch a month later do any damage to ArenaNet's new game?

That's a "remains to be seen" sort of thing, but here are my thoughts.

  • GW2 doesn't require a subscription.
  • GW2 does hope to earn from the RMT shop.
  • WoW's expansion might hurt the RMT sales for a time.
  • But any "dent" it makes, won't be permanent in GW2's revenue.
  • Just as any dent GW2 makes in WoW's subscriptions won't be permanent.

And in case I haven't stated enough of the obvious, many people will buy both, and many will buy just one. In short, folks. There is no battle between GW2 and WoW. At least not yet. The two games will both live harmoniously alongside each other because of divergent revenue models, just as the original GW lived quite healthily alongside WoW (and still does).

Me? Well, I'll be buying both. But that's only because I really want to catch 'em all and be the very best.
What are your thoughts? Do you think there is direct competition here between the two games or are the different business models and their appeal to different types of gamer sufficient for these to coexist harmoniously side by side without negatively harming the other's playerbase?

I don't think it's really fair to compare a fairly old game (and an Expansion at that) to GW2.

I do know that there are people who were really hardcore into WoW who no longer have an interest in it, and could care less about Pandas. Then there's people like Avalith who are looking forward to the Pandas and probably could care less about GW2.

I would like to play both of these games. Pretty much just want to roll and Panda and check out what Pandaria is all about. Betting Blizzard really made something there that will excite fans, otherwise why make it?

Personally I've told myself I won't touch subscription based games ever again, so after quitting wow a very long time ago an expac won't bring me back. Right now I'm not sure if I should get Gw2 if at all, I might wait for some post-launch opinions from people and have things settle down. I haven't touched any mmo's for a while so I'm not sure if I really want to end up in such a time consuming game 'genre' or branch again.

After cataclysm i got board with it time for blizzard to just stop making endless expansions and just design a new game call it wow2 i dont care, but like some said above its getting old i love wow played it from BC to Cata but just got tired of worrying about raids, endless grinding to get an item that would be replaced in a month anyway due to a new patch. just didn't seem worth it anymore and i started playing less and less then i realized i was giving blizz my money and not even playing the game so right around d3 came out i canceled my subscription to wow and then after playing that mess of a game and getting board with that can you believe what game i re installed? Guild Wars and been playing a little on there so to answer the question i will be playing GW2 rebuilding my guild in the server Dragonbrand and wont give wow another look until it completely starts brand new just like GW did and look what happened when arena net knew it wasn't any point making any more expansions and just built a whole new game blizzard should do this too. Besides we all know MoP is just blizzards way to keep their customers from jumping over to GW2 which it may until it gets repetitive and boring which to me it didn't take long.

Yea I'm currently not sure if I should wait and see a bit more of GW2 or that I should just get it, since it's a single time purchase it's hard to go wrong with it as I did enjoy WoW and other MMO's for a large part. I just ended up spending far too much time in it over the years so there wasn't anything fun left to do. Ah well I still have a few days to decide if I should try and get into GW2 during launch.

Mists of Pandaria would probably be another big hit for WoW. While i personally like GW2 more than the original GW, it still is just another MMO game. and we know that WoW is still the king in this genre. no doubt.

WoW was never king of the genre.. Just because it had the most players doesent mean it was the best mmorpg.. It was very noob friendly and blizzard runs one hell of a marketing campaign.. But king of the genre is a bs statement. Gw2 is far superior. The kings of the genre will always be DAoC, EQ, UO and DAoC. That's just a fact.

We are individuals with different perceptions, so to speak. The rumour about the competition between Mists of Pandaria and GW2 with the rest of the genre isn't important at all. Whether they compete or not, the bottom line is we play what we find interesting and we enjoy.
