Subject:   PS3 won't recognize anything on my external hard drive
-------------------------------------------
At first my external hard drive wasn't recognized at all by the PS3, so I found out I had to format it to FAT32, which I did. Then the PS3 recognized it, but I put the files in there and it wouldn't find them. I then found out that I must make the folder PS3 on the hard drive, then inside that put VIDEO, THEME, etc. and put the files in the respective folders. I have done this, and yet my PS3 still doesn't recognize when I try to install themes (I have double checked that they are in the THEME folder and are of the p3t file type) or play videos (I have double checked that they are in the VIDEO folder and are of various file types). I'm exasperated and can't find anyone with this problem in any forums. I really appreciate your help. Thanks!

There is no need to do that for videos, actually. Just make sure you're using triangle and selecting "browse all" or whatever when you're going through the directories.

I've already tried that too. It says there are no files, but there most certainly are.

How big is the harddrive, and what did you use to format it? I believe that if you use the windows default then it partitions it at 32GB or was it 64... in either case I think it will only give you upto that much space... there is however another Formating tool for which I have a link on my home computer to... it's official from Microsoft,... it just doesn't come straight on your comp for some reason... in any case, try formatting it with that and then trying again.

Also for the video, make sure it's "VIDEO" as opposed to "VIDEOS" and I think it has to be "PS3/THEMES" (note / denotes sub folder).

Also what is the type of file, either way the PS3 should ALWAYS read it, and just tell you if its an incompatible file type... (by saying corrupted data). If the PS3 isn't reading it, I'll say it's a problem with you Harddrive to be honest.. can it read things of Memory Sticks/Flash Drives?

I use a 120gb "Passport" external drive. It is formatted to FAT32 just as I bought it. It works fine, so I am not sure it would have to be partitioned to 64gb, etc.
Is the drive you are using powered, or does it get it's power via the USB cable?

If you use the windows default formatter, then it causes Partitioning or something, however there's another Formatting device that allows you to use the full space of the Harddrive... I'll link to it when I get home...

...in any case, mines a 60GB External Harddrive which I've put into an enclosure and connect via USB (and it gets pwoers from that... though it requires three USB ports... may get an adapter so I can connect it via mains TBH...

Hi Logan,
I know this isn't helpful but you have my sympathy. I'm having the identical problem as you. Still searching everywhere for the solution. If somebody comes up with it, I'll be over the moon!- Crowbar

I'm having the same problem. I've got a Western Digital My Book Essential 3tb drive which is powered by an adapter. I used minitool partition wizard application to format the drive with FAT32. PS3 finds the drive but it won't show any files in the VIDEO MUSIC or PHOTO folder. I used the triangle button to display all files and it shows one jpeg photo out of two (the other one is shown as corrupted file).

Really not sure what's wrong here. Please suggest something. Many thanks.

I'm having the same problem. If found with my music files if I went into an album folder and waited a long time the track files eventually appear (the clock in top right corner pulses whilst it thinks it through).

It doesn't recognise my photos either, but I can live without that.
