In celebration of Pitfall!'s 30th anniversary, Activision and developer The Blast Furnace are putting out a brand new title exclusive to iOS devices. Characterizing the release as "rebooting" the franchise, this modern iteration of Pitfall! will include 3D graphics and additional gameplay mechanics, yet retain that old school feeling with snakes, gold bars and Pitfall Harry himself. The new Pitfall! app is available now for your iOS platform.
Pitfall! may not be remembered very vividly in today's long-term memory impaired gaming culture, but it's likely one of the most significant games in our history. While not the sole ancestry of the genre, Pitfall! introduced the side-scrolling/platforming action that subsists today. Activision's reboot, especially considering the franchise's birthday, will hopefully pay dutiful respect to the classic.
Blast Furnace rep Gordon Hall, of Rockstar Leeds fame, had this to say:
"The original Pitfall! on the Atari 2600 pioneered the action-platform/runner genre. The team has kept the elements that made the original so much fun to play, and merged them with a cool, retro HD art style, updated controls and play mechanics to keep both old-school fans and newcomers happy."
Pitfall! is, again, now available on iOS devices -- iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. Check out the screenshots below to see if the Pitfall! reboot is a proper tribute to this storied franchise.
