I was putting music on my iPod when after putting a song on it my iTunes promptly froze and closed.
Now it will not reopen and my iPod is stuck on the "connected" screen and I am afraid to take it out in case it ruins it as my computer still recognizes it as a portable hardware device.
what can i do?

As long as it's "connected" it's no big deal. Can you try to stop the device in Windows?

If you can't, you can safely disconnect. Any lost data You can just recover to an older state via iTunes.

I go to "Safely Remove Hardware" but it takes a good while to just come back and say that it cannot due to "Generic Volume" being used.

edit: I tried to Safely Remove again and this time it says:
Windows can't stop your 'Apple iPod USB Device' because a program is still using it.
Close and programs that might be using the device, and then try again later.

But the program that would be using it is unresponsive and not even open :/

my iTunes is quite freaky sometimes because when I stop a song during being played because maybe the telephone rings or something like that and start it again - there is no sound anymore and it does not work - what could that be?

Well, I fell asleep in the process of trying to fix it and the batteries in the ipod died and thusly "unplugged" itself.
And when I turned on the computer the next day it was all good.
