-------------------------------------------
You can use this thread to: ask questions about jailbreaking, ask for assistance with jailbreaking your device, or just discuss iPod touch/iPhone development with other iPod hackers and enthusiasts.

What is jailbreaking?

In a sense, jailbreaking is freeing your device from the cell Apple locked it in. A jailbroken device is like a skeleton key, where as an iPod touch/iPhone that isn't jailbroken is similar to a house key - not much to do but unlock your front door. Once your device has been jailbroken you'll be able to enjoy the many wonderful applications, from third party developers, that you wouldn't find listed in the iTunes store. You'll have the ability to create and display your own custom theme; icons, lock screen, battery icon, etc. You'll even be able to run your own homemade apps straight from your springboard!

Is jailbreaking illegal?

Short answer: no.

Hacking the iPod touch/iPhone is not illegal. While Apple would like to make you think it is illegal, it is not, and it is impossible to get in any legal trouble for hacking either device. From the moment you purchased your device it officially became yours to do with as you wish.

What is illegal is redistributing copyrighted code, such as the operating system of the iPod Touch and the iPhone, on the internet. See: Neoseeker's Terms of Use

The Jailbreak Lingo

Jailbreak - Modifying the iPhone/iPod touch software so that 3rd party applications can be installed and executed.

Unlocking - Modifying part of the iPhone software to allow it to work with a SIM card of a cellular carrier other then the one it is exclusive to in your country.

Baseband - The modem software in the iPhone.

Springboard - The iPod touch/iPhone's home screen, where all of the applications are displayed.

Home Button - The round button on the front side of the iPhone/iPod touch.

Power Button - The oblong oval shaped button on the top of the iPhone/iPod touch.

Jailbreaking the iPod touch

redsn0w - BETA 2G f/w 2.2.1

There are numerous ways to go about jailbreaking your iPod touch, however redsn0w (by planetbeing & the iPhone-dev team) is by far the easiest and safest method out there.

Official redsn0w website: http://www.redsn0w.com/

Changelog

New version, 0.3, posted.

Change log for v0.3
  1. Added the Device Tree patch so should work with LogoMe v2.2 (which will be released shortly)
  2. Added fix for PPC support
Change log for v0.2

Here's an updated version of redsn0w that should resolve some common issues:
  1. MobileInstallation cache is now updated rather than deleted, speeding up the first reboot time for those with many Apps already installed.
  2. System/Library/Fonts and /usr/bin are now also moved over to the User partition, getting rid of some space issues, especially when font-heavy Winterboard themes are installed.
  3. On Mac, you should now be able to directly double-click on the redsn0w binary instead of having to launch it from Terminal.
Installation

Just put your iPod touch into DFU and double click redsn0w.exe. No LibUSB needed! This will modify the firmware directly on your iPod. No hassle of restoring! For firmware 2.2.1. This tool does not work with 3.0 betas.

QuickFreedom - 2.2.1 Jailbreaking GUI

Previously known as QuickTether, QuickFreedom works on Windows XP and Vista (64-bit and Windows 7 also may work) and is the 1st "Untethered" GUI to support full jailbreak and boot logos.

Official QuickFreedom website: http://quickfreedom.com/

Installation

Download the latest package, then run the executable.

redTool - 2.2.1 Jailbreaking Software

Official redTool dev blog: http://redtool-dev.org/blog/

Requirements
  1. Windows XP SP2+/Vista SP1+
  2. Microsoft .NET 2.0 or higher
  3. LibUSB
  4. Original Apple 2.2.1 iPod touch firmware
Installation

For Windows XP: Download and run redTool.exe, or use the Installer Bundle to Install and run redTool.

For Windows Vista: Download redTool and set redTool.exe for Administrator mode and Compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2. Also, set the same properties for each executable in the "redTool.Bundle\rslite\*.*" Directory.

Is there a way to do this on other models of iPod other than touch?

No.

There are open source firmwares available for other iPod models, but it depends on the iPod you have. 1st through 5.5th generation iPod, iPod Mini and 1st generation iPod Nano have the ability to run Rockbox and iPod Linux. All of the other iPod and iPod Nano models have yet to be cracked.

No. Only the iPod touch and iPhone can be jailbroken.

Damn. I mean like Rockbox for my old Ipod (5.5g). I'm getting tired of the stock, boring one

There haven't been any advancements in open source iPod firmware since the 2nd generation Nano's were released. You're just out of luck.

At least you've got 120gb to fill.

I am using the quick freeom thing, and it says in the lower left corner of the window, Ipod not connected. How do I fix that?

The program can't confirm that a device is connected for whatever reason, so just reconnect your iPod touch to your PC.

Is it better to use redsn0w or Quickpwn?

I just bought a 16gb first gen iTouch and I want to Jailbreak it.
I have it running on 2.2.1 OS.

--

I just tried to Jailbreak using Quickpwn.
It froze at the Pineapple boot screen.
I put it into DFU mode and restored back to 2.2.1 [which I originally paid for].
