Due to the extreme amount of video converter threads I've been seeing I decided to make a sticky thread for them. Do not use this topic to SPAM. Any questions or links regarding video converters should be posted here. I will allow the posting of shareware programs if they are noted as shareware and they only appear once in the topic. If I see a shareware program repeatedly posted in the thread I will delete all posts about that program. If I feel that there is advertising occurring I will remove the offending posts.

This thread is for general questions about video converters. You may use the iPod forum for more specific questions.

Also, please don't inquire about illegal activities like ripping rentals or breaking encryption. Such posts will be deleted.

Question: I have a DVD video camera that records onto mini DVD-RW's. The file format it records to is VR aka .VRO etc. I tried plugging my camera into the school macs to use imovie, and imovie wont recognize it. I cannot edit the video at school, and need to. I cannot install any third party programs at school, but at home I have a windows pc that I can use to convert the VRO files to other imovie friendly formats. Any suggestions?(also I did not try this with a finalized disc, if finalizing the disc will allow me to edit then please tell me)

thanks

I use HandBrake on Linux; Handbrake.fr.
It's open source, so it's free and works great. There should also be a Windows and Mac OSX version.

A new rule for this thread/forum is that video converter links may NOT be posted by new members. Anyone who does so will be permanently banned on the grounds of advertising. This is due to the large scale advertising in this forum, and the lack of a moderator to verify if something is free/legal.

What I don't understand is why Apple makes it so hard to convert video files. You would think that if there is no DRM on the video file, that iTunes should convert it for you. It just pisses me off I always have such a rough time getting video on the iPod/iPhone. iTunes is on version 9... not acceptable.
