Many enemies are vulnerable against wind, and it seems to do a lot of damage overall (Large Cutter) and is pretty accurate (Wind Cutter lv 3).
Water is THE must have element; get 8 points in it at the beginning so you have healing lv 1, then go boost your primary element up to 50 and come back to water for more healing power. Drain magic is also pretty handy.
Earth has the most powerful spell of them all: barrier. Avalanche is also very good against multiple enemies.
Fire is useless IMO. There's one good spell, Extinction, but its accuracy is horrible and you don't get any xp when you use it.

Fire is a good element... Fire Ball level 3 is awesome.

There are no dragons in Quest... Maybe you meant Wyverns?
Anyway, I started a new game using fire spells, and I see two major problems with Fireball so far:
1- Their miss chance is pretty high
2- You have to get very close to your enemies, which leaves you exposed to their most accurate and most powerful attacks. Having to spend a Fresh Bread every 3 rounds when fighting Solvaring wasn't fun. (Hm, random thought: Solvaring's close range attack is big but slow, so maybe using the Giant's Shoes would be a good tactic?)

I hate water. Most people always use it to get that healing spell.
You don't need it. You can get along just fine with the items you find and win(and not a fresh bread less).
Wind and Earth magic are hands-down the way to go. Cutter 3's powerful and reliable, Avalanche is.. just plain over-powered, confusion's a more reliable way to restore Mp's, Agility 2's very good for making every attack count as well as making the enemy miss more- that's offense and defense aid in one spell. Magic barrier's.. there. I thought Avalanche was over-powered, but this is just wrong. Silence and restriction spells can be as a last resort, or a gambling opening if you're up against a croud. Just don't anything stupid like silence a ghost-stalker or something.
You can also learn your way around enemies- Those Wvyerns in cull hazard can cause a lot of trouble if you're going to rough it like I do when I play this game without healing spells, but you can actually beat them without taking a single hit every time if you use a distance spell, and step away from them every time they move towaards you, and their fireball will miss and even if they get right on top of you they won't ever use a fire pillar.

You don't need it.
Or you can save yourself the trouble by taking just enough Water spirits to get Healing lv 1, without losing out on much.

Save yourself the trouble? Using that 4 hp heal gets tedious, and using the water element puts a big damper on your stat gain, all except HP, which seems to grow fastest with high water(I honestly don't know if I'm just seeing things, but I think your agility and MP also rise a lot faster with a focus on wind magic build-up/use).
Quest is too easy with the healing spell, and I like having 50 wind elements before I enter the windward forest, thank you.

That can usually be done even if you get Healing. If not, just spend some time running around for monsters.

True... My agility is somewhere above 110. I've heard if you use wind your agility goes up, if you use earth your defense goes up, if you use fire your MP goes up, and if you use water your HP goes up...

Yeah, and as far as stat-gain goes, it's quantity over quality- a blood jell's attack will raise your defense and hp 5x's faster than a pale rider.
The blood jell's also one of the best to raise defense/hp with, since it's weak and you can find them in several different places. You can let it attack several times before needing to waste time recovering.
Just don't raise your agility too high before you train with them, as they're pretty slow, and you can always set your controller face-down with the c-stick down to let Brain run in circles in a town to raise agility.. Just leave it like this for a few hours.. Real nice to come back to from a trip to somewhere.

I like to raise my agility by using that trick/cheat of putting a rubber band on the controller and having Brian run into a wall and just leaving the N64 on all night... like 4 more agility....woo... no wonder this game was a flop
