NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has apparently made a discovery "for the history books," but we'll have to wait a few weeks to learn what the new Red Planet find may be, media reports suggest.

The discovery was made by Curiosity's Sample Analysis at Mars instrument, NPR reported today (Nov. 20). SAM is the rover's onboard chemistry lab, and it's capable of identifying organic compounds — the carbon-containing building blocks of life as we know it.

"This data is gonna be one for the history books," Curiosity chief scientist John Grotzinger, of Caltech in Pasadena, told NPR. "It's looking really good."

Grotzinger said the rover team won't be ready to announce just what SAM found for several weeks yet, NPR reported. The scientists want to check and double-check the results, to make sure they're for real.

Pretty cool stuff.

Probably found some sort of bacteria or protozoa. Unless it is little Spore looking animals walking around, I won't be surprised.

I think you guy's expectations are pretty high, if it is something to do with life I bet it will be extremely simple and basic, maybe not even actual bacteria. I'be happy to be wrong though. I for one welcome out new Martian overlords.

Maybe they found actual water on the planet? Either way, fascinating stuff!

what if mars was just like earth a very long ass time ago?, i mean it also had humans and stuff, and with the sun dying, it got cold there and it just died.. but it preserved life form dna in a frozen rock and that rock somewhat got chipped and flew to earth and therefore passing on dna stuff?? and what if that ice rock was what killed dinosaurs?
and the ice rock thawing was the ice age?
give it a couple'a years and maybe earth will be mars in the future (cold and dead) and the next earth's who ever's before earth that's closer to the sun.

or Aliens - the highly technological martians learned their planet is dying and the only way to preserve their intelligence is to craft a ship containing martian dna and kamikaze it straight to the closest planet - the young green earth (only, there's dinosaurs and they have to be wiped out first), and thus killing the dinosaurs and giving way to the martian descendants the humans.

You are aware that Mars and our planet, Earth, share the same Sun right?

but the sun was obviously strongrt in the past when it was younger and thus brighter giving mars the perfect amount of sun strenght just enough for the martians to have lived in an earth like environment!
and it probably had stronger spinny power to have made mars take onl 365 days to orbit around it

Please PM me a full thesis about your findings. I'm very intrigued to learn about the sun losing its spinny powers and Mars humans dying because of it.

ofcourse it can.
the planets around the sun are called drarves because theyre smaller than the sun, in astrology terms it's sunny and the 8 dwarves featuring pluto. the color of the planet determines what kinda dwarf it is. mars is a red dwarf, our earth is the developed red dwarf the blue dwarf and venus is a white dwarf.
