This just happened to me to about an hour ago lol You have to be VERY good friends with them both at the same time and it just happens on a day when you walk into the left-side village.
Before you see Sammy the salesman & Maria talking on the crossroad, there is a scene with the Mayor & his Wife talking about going broke.
This all Happened the day before the Harvest Festival (Fall 11) on the first year. I got to be the harvest king for next year
