For me, I beat every single boss in the game without all my fancy equipment (Legend Casques), except two. Now some of those were difficult (i.e. Grand Jewel, Emperor Doel, etc.), but the ones I could never get past without Legend Casques were Magician Faust and that blasted Divine Dragon Spirit. I remember how after something big happens (I forget, but it's in Mayfil), that I could go back and get that item he guards without killing him, and how upset I was when I discovered it to be a simple Destone Amulet. I was pretty mad. But those are the worst for me. But you don't need to fight either of them to win, so hey! I'm good!

Well for me, I will go with Lenus(after pretending to be Princess Emille). She can cast multiple spell in a row, and those spells are ultimate elemental spells.. Well, if you have equipped your characters with Legendary Casque which cost around 10K, then Lenus will do very less damage in her spells... ^-^

I mainly believe Lenus was the biggest challenge because of the fact that you are not expecting to have such a crazy boss battle at that point in the game. Her double spells are too deadly and it is rare for a player to level up like crazy before you get to it.

I dunno, with Lenus, it was always a bit of a challenge because by then I always had Kongol on my team. He would be my most overused character(excluding Dart) and it would be so long until you actually see him land a turn and sometimes it came after having to revive him a few times because of his terrible magical defense.
Grand Jewel is easy tbh. Occasionally I would do the "have enough for one turn Dragoon" and deal massive damage that way. But most of the time, I would just use my hard hitting additions to take him out.
That's what the developers were probably aiming for with her. Making her a somewhat different boss by having multiple chances to attack you. It kept you on the edge by constantly healing in fear of her doing it due to her high speed.
After her I would have to say the Dragon Block Staff(I forgot the name of the boss). Only during my first playthrough. I kept on insisting that I wanted to do dragoon form only to fail every single time.
That would be the Grand Jewel.

I was actually surprised at how much of a challenge Lenus could be the first time. She doesn't seem like someone who would of been a challenge but her having multiple attacks was painful.
I was very unprepared for the fight, and ended up dying from her constant 2-turns-in-a-row AoE spells.
This is one battle that I was not expecting much of a challenge from. Since you enter the castle and meet her I thought it would just be a simple boss battle. Took me way too many tries to be able to beat her.
But Faust was a nightmare. It took me way too long to be able to beat him. The first time that is; the rest of the times it was just for fun.

My top 5 hardest bosses for when I played the game through the first few times [Because now, all bosses are easy]. Note that, in my first three play--through, I never faced Faust... that's why he isn't on the list.
#1. The Divine Dragon Spirit. Oh, the nightmares this S.o.B gave me. My first play-through, I tried to kill him several times thinking I was required to beat him in order to continue, but realized I could just pass him up, which I did. Second time through, I tried to kill him optionally and after a few whole nights of attempting, I gave up. Third time through, I actually prepared a lot more and had a legend casque... even so, it still took me several times to finally put that boss behind me. I am on my fourth play-through right now... but this time I plan on having Legend Casques and Phantom Shields.
#2. Melbu Frahma This one is self explanatory tbh... he's just plain a strong boss.
#3. Dragoon Emperor Doel My first two play-throughs against this guy were horrendous. Not until the third time around did I realize that you simply just spam Guard when his shield is up [Just like you do when when the guy in the Arena puts his hammer down and says "Come On"] and that it will disappear after several turns. Given you're loaded on healing potions, he's easy after knowing to do this.
#4. Lenus 1st Encounter To this day, this c%$& still gives me problems. Mostly because I use Kongol and Albert, which makes her speed deadly + the fact that Kongol has next to no magic defense. She can spam that blizzard spell or w/e it is twice in a row and my turn sequences always ends up with *Healing Breeze* - *Healing Breeze* - *Attack* and at this point, Darts attacks are weak, and Kongol takes massive magic damage... so I have to rely mostly on Albert and his massive GoWD damage to win that fight every time.
#5. The Divine Dragon Nowdays, he's one of the easier bosses, but back in my first 2 play-throughs, he really gave me a hard time with that Divine Cannon. I dreaded seeing the "Divine Cannon Countdown" lol because I knew I was about to be pummeled.
Easy bosses? -Someone mentioned Kongol being hard... meh, he was never difficult at any point for me. I had enough sense to abuse Guard Vs him the first time playing. -Someone mentioned the Gem Guardian being hard.... meh, you just need to know what to do. Don't use your dragoons, hit hard, hit fast, and he's really one of the easiest bosses in the game. -Someone mentioned Lloyd being hard... meh, just like the Gem Guardian, if you've got common sense enough to not whip out your Dragoons, he's cake. I mean, he doesn't wield the Dragon Buster for nothing, it should be a no-brainer to not use your Dragoons [Which imo, aren't that important to begin with]. I knew this the first time I played the game.
On another note, did anyone ever have a hard time against that first virage you run into at Volcano villude? I remember getting my ass handed to me several times by him... but after facing him the other day, he was such cake, I whopped him in literally in a matter of just 5 hits... I can't imagine why he was ever a challenge at all for me my first time playing lol.
...and I do remember that Imago thing. It was only dangerous because it's Instant-Kill attack catches you off guard. I lost to it once and had the sense to throw Talisman on Albert after that.
