No. A large part of the game is story oriented.
As with any RPG, there are going to be random encounters and they are going to interrupt your dungeon exploring.

No I mean a game like .hack which is just dungeon after dungeon, or Dark Cloud is that way too. I just don't enjoy games where every two steps your thrust into a random battle and your trying to figure out where to go and then a battle comes up and you deal with that and then you forget where you were. Games like Suikoden IV and Dragon Quest 7 for psx were particularly bad in that front. I play rpg's for story, characters, music, environment, and if those are good I'll deal with the random battles, unless there insanely frequent like dq 7 which I just gave up on cause I couldn't take it.

So is it a game where you see the enemies and can choose whether to fight them or not, or is it just a swoosh and you fight?? Also is this game a dungeon crawler??
No you can't see them before hand, it's random encounters. And if by dungeon crawler you mean an action game like Castlevania... no, it's an RPG through and through.

Nah. I'd say they're ok. Unlike other RPG's (like Final Fantasy) where every battle is essentially the same, Persona 2 is different. You can fight your enemies, or you can talk to them, which further branches what the outcome of the battle is. So even if the encounter rate isn't low, it's fresh enough to keep you interested.
(Plus you tend to need all of the battles anyway, as it seems every new dungeon you're under leveled again, no matter how much you trained in the previous dungeon.)
