Might and Delight, creators of the bothPid and Shelter, have announced their new project. Shelter will be receiving a sequel in Shelter 2, though Might and Delight describe it as a "spiritual sequel" which could imply some significant changes to the unique survival game. One thing that certainly won't be changing is the beautiful, stylized art that only Might and Delight could create. Also unchanged is how ridiculously adorable the protagonist of their game is -- the lynx.
Yes, the badgers have told their story and now it's time for the lynx to shine. Mother Lynx and her cubs will be striking out to survive in the barren tundra. CEO Anders Westin provides further elaboration on Shelter 2's premise:
"The essence of Shelter as a concept is keeping your family alive. But we have decided to let the animal itself set the pace and character of the gameplay. The badger translated into a slow and linear journey - with the lynx however, Shelter 2 will become a much more forceful experience, where improving your techniques for hunting prey takes a much bigger role."
How Anders description directly translates into gameplay begins with Shelter moving into an open world. That's only the beginning, however, as Might and Delight makes clear that they want to move away from the rather linear experience of Shelter with their "spiritual sequel". That means many new gameplay systems, such as stamina, different types of jumps and movements, and a variety of prey to kill.
Additional "maternal features" are also included. I hope beyond belief that means players will get to cuddle with the lynx cubs. If they don't include something along those lines, so help me... Might and Delight, you don't put out a teaser trailer like this and then not let players cuddle the kittens. Of course, that would probably only serve to drive me to tears when something terrible happens.
Yes, much like in the original Shelter, the wilderness can be very unforgiving. Expect things to go wrong, as Anders points out quite clearly:
"The beauty of nature goes hand in hand with its unforgiving rawness. That is central in Shelter 2, and one of the reasons we chose to make a game about a Lynx. They are in middle of the food chain, and there are far more vicious things out on the cold tundra..."
Shelter 2 is planned for digital release on PC in the fall of 2014.
I really liked the first shelter, incredibly short but I nagged it on a sale.
I finished with only 1 badger left
and after that ending I can't be mad at the eagle!
Lynxes are cute and all but lets be real, wolves and pups >>>>>>>>> lynxes. This is just a biological fact. Also Penguins. And brown bears. and dolphins. Not cats though, pretty hard to like something so evil.
I wish pandas lived in a harsher environment because there would be nothing topping the cuteness of a baby panda trying to climb a tree then rolling down all confused.
