If you like action, adventure, romance, mystery, medieval mayhem and a smidgen of the supernatural, this series is for you. I swear to god, these are the best books I've read since Lord of the Rings, and I find them more fun to read than Harry Potter (though Harry Potter is more for the younger sort than this series).

If you've ever read a novel before, than these are a MUST READ. If you read this thread and neglect to at least check out this series on your next trip to the bookstore, then I swear I'll use what knowledge of black-magic I have to curse you...

Anyways, they're great. I wish I could talk to more people on Neo about them, but I don't know anyone whose read them, so I'm trying to GET people to read them.

Details: Author is George R.R. Martin, series is called A Song of Ice and Fire, first book is called A Game of Thrones, and you can find the rest out from there.

Imagine a feudal kingdom on a massive continent in a world filled with many cultures and half-legendary lands and an ancient history. Imagine a time where dragons once lived but magic is now dwindling, yet the seasons can be long or short, bringing glorious summers or terrible winters that last years at a time. Imagine a massive iron throne from which seven kingdoms are ruled, with false knights and true all gathered about it in hopes of blood or glory or profit, and shadows behind it pushing the pieces that make up the game of thrones.

I just google image search them Mouldy Cheese if I want a face to put with the name. Best of both worlds!
Ha that's true! The first series is really quite wonderful though. I'd recommend giving it a try once you've finished the book; if nothing else but to see what you think of the adaptation!

I always quite liked them too. I'm not sure how important they'll be later on, or which way they'll swing tbh. I really liked the Viper and Doran. Quentyn.. not so much.

I wanted to know more about Dark Star too, though there's always the chance he'll pop back up later on.
Hopefully! I'd really like to see them play a larger part as they're really quite different to the rest of the seven kingdoms. Particularly loved the idea of the Water Gardens.

Am I the only one who was really fascinated by the Dornish? They've only ever been touched upon (well, usually just the mention of dornish wine) and it really seems like over the last couple of books their story has really begun building up.

I find myself struggling to recall some of the many, many ser's who are mentioned throughout the book and who they relate to as well, so you're not alone there

I'm about halfway through Book 1 having picked it up a couple of weeks ago. Really enjoying it but want to add my voice to those who say that there seem to be way more characters than you can possibly remember.

Unless someone can convince me otherwise, I'm not really interested in the TV show since I imagine they'll have gone with the modern tendency of focusing far too much on fight scenes and sex scenes than characterisation and politics.
The books are better than the tv shows, although one thing I will say for it is that it really, really helps when it comes to remembering all the characters. Being able to see them on screen and going "Ohhh that guy" is quite handy! In the later books I had to keep flicking back to that list of characters to try and remember who they were, although I was always afraid that there would be spoilers in another name...Overall the books give you a lot more background to the local legends and events than the tv series, which focuses more on the present.

Hope you enjoy them ^^

I am going to take this one , the next time I am going to the library. After going through the thread, I just feel like I really do need to read this one. I like lord of rings series and anything which is similar to that one, would be something that i would look forward to read. Hope I get this one soon !
Let us know what you think!
It's really like nothing else out there at the moment (or, at least, nothing I've come across yet). The only problem I really had was remembering who all of the characters are. Even up until the 5th book I had to keep flipping to the back or googling to find out who they were and what relation they had to the story again. The series sort of made that a bit easier by giving you some faces to remember the names by!

My aunt sent me the first four books back in August I think and I only read less than five pages of the first one. But now I'm reading a different series. I'll finish (or start) A Song of Ice and Fire next.
