1. You were on drugs and were hallucinating. The knife Vaas stabbed you with was actually a syringe. Who knew? I was genuinely confused at first.
2. When you apparently killed Vaas and collapsed to the floor, his eyes opened up. So although you were high and may of stabbed Vaas in reality, he could of survived it.
Now lets be real here. Are ubisoft being crafty and going to do some DLC regarding this (like a second coming of vaas) or is it just there to freak you out?

My theories are kind of hassled, but here they are:
1) The knife is magical in the sense that it lets the wielder choose whether to enter their enemy or force their enemy to enter them. When Vaas stabs you with the knife, he seems to enter into your person, and when you kill him, he becomes part of you. Jason can still hear Vaas in his head at some points. Also, if you decide to join Citra at the end, she stabs you with the knife, allowing her to force you into her, so you can possibly be reborn as the future leader of the Rakyat. 2) Jason doesn't kill Vaas. Vaas enters into Jason and allows himself to be defeated so he can become one with Jason, allowing him to escape from Hoyt, and perhaps to even give him a second chance at life. It could also be symbolic of Jason's final descent into madness, as he takes on the role of Vaas. Vaas was everything Jason hated, but the more Jason killed, the more like Vaas he became.

vaas is alive it was all a set up to get him from hoyt's control and keep him alive vaas is just putting you to the test to become a warrior and take his place(hes working with citra) he puts the lighter in your pocket, shoots you there ties your ropes so you can break loose on the water kills your brother to get you started he and citra love each other she didn't want to kill him, so find a replacement

somehow i doubt that. he looks like he enjoys killing people.
but then why would vaas want to fake his own death?
I'm not sure if Vaas was intelligent enough for this, but if he did fake his own death it would be because he became a drug addict, Hoyt's bi***, he became his sisters enemy and he was really unstable.
I think he just wanted to get away from all of that, go to rehab and become a freaking lawyer or what not.

Alright I made this just to comment on this but there's a trailer I saw once where Jason is tied to a chair blindfolded and Vaas is in front of him talking to his pointing and gun to Jason's head and Vaas puts it in Jason's hands and says "pull the trigger hermano. PULL THE ****ING TRIGGER!!!" Just like when your in the dream and shoot him I believe you are tripping from the knife/syringe that is stabbed into you and after you should him you conquer Vaas' spirit in your drug trip and when he opens his eyes after you kill him it's his spirit being absorbed into you letting him be "reborn" to fulfill his destiny of becoming king of the Rakyats but in you instead (kind of like saying you become Vaas) tell me what y'all think about this
