I think their focus might have changed a bit recently. Thoug it's not like they don't want to make any games right now. Could easily be that they are working on something other than DOTA right now but don't want to announce it yet. But they have to be seen to be doing something else so they're helping out the community sorta on the side. Least that's my theory.

Well the only thing that VALVe are officially working on atm that I know of is DOTA 2 and they say it's not their idea fully so it can't use the full team. They're probably deciding (or have decided) what to do next.
It's the old problem of whether VALVe wants to make ANY game.
This is my fear right here.

It's the old problem of whether VALVe wants to make a 3rd game. Financially L4D1 laid the foundations and L4D2 broke into a much wider market which was helped by both positive and negative publicity. Considering that L4D2 was more successful I don't think it's hard to see L4D3 one day. They've already had plenty of talks between themselves about it for sure. I think them saying that means the idea will sit on the shelf for now maybe but if they weren't interested in developing L4D3 they would have said by now seeing as all the DLC is out.
Personally I'd love to see it. It shouldn't come out for a while really. With the knee-jerk reaction of L4D2 this won't see the light of day until 2014 at least. And they should put some extra time into it. Games like Dead Island for example were good but clearly needed more time. I don't think L4D2 was unfinished myself but there were improvments to be made afterwards and some were like the AI Infected for Versus. I'm all for it and would love for it to be out soon. Just not too soon...

This doesn't tell us much. "some time down the road" could literally mean like 5+ Years... hell, we're still waiting for anything about Half Life 2: Episode 3 and Half Life 3.
