The chances of encountering a shiny in the wild is 1/8192. So yeah, very lucky.

And yes, shiny pokemon do still sparkle when sent out into battle.

so i just started playing pokemon white recently. i walked into some rustling grass, and a Sawk appeared. at first i just figured it was a regular one....i almost knocked it out accidently, but i managed to catch it without much hassle. i soon found out that this was actually a shiny Sawk! it was near the nurse standing near pinwheel forest who heals your pokemon for you. so i dont know what the odds are, but this was my first encounter with the thing! im assuming that i got considerably lucky. is this abnormal? what exactly are the odds? do shinies sparkle when sent out to battle?
