When I use a One-Handed Sword my character keeps switching to smashing enemies with his shield instead of slashing them with his sword.
It's very annoying and I have no idea what is switching the attack mode.
What activates it and how do I switch it back to slashing mode?

I think of mh as one big math equation. And sns is a pretty small number in this whole thing.
I agree, http://www.gamefaqs.com/wii/943655-monster-hunter-tri/faqs/59207 but SnS, despite its minimal damage, makes up for it in a number of ways:

It can stick really close to a monster and attack constantly.
It can do maximum damage in a given amont of time and still roll away, thanks to the weak but fast attacks. Imagine a sword's combos adding up to the damage of a GS charge attack. The charge might get hit by the monster before it even lands, but the sword has been whacking away all that time and does almost all of its damage before having to evade away. The sword has this effect as compared to all the other weapons, although to a lesser degree.
It has a shield for emergencies, although a lot of people forget to use it.
It's the best weapon for evasion because it can dodge all the time (a reason people forget to use the shield).

That's not even the half of it, but all in all, it's still a viable weapon to use because of its unique attributes.
Nardebosche, for example, is my favorite ala-killing weapon.

Nardy is probably the only useful sns but I barely even use that. I probably wouldn't miss my sns's if I sold them all because there are always better alternatives. True someone with an sns could do more damage with a GS. But that's also saying I could do more damage to jhen if I had guan dao and a noob had drack claw demise. It all varies for everyone. And iin my experience, the sns has always been outmatched in every hunt for every monster.

What controller style are you using? The wiimote & nunchuk?

The "shield bash" is simply one of the sword and shield's many attacks. On the wiimote, it is activated by twisting (orienting) the controller RIGHT and pressing A.

Other attacks (with the sword), are activated by twisting the remote LEFT, FLAT, or UP and pressing A. Shaking the remote UP and DOWN activates a normal combo. The - button is another attack, and the Z button blocks (with the shield).

Quickly tilt the remote in different directions (or hold it still) and press A to combo the attacks. It's easy (for noobs) to accidentally use the wrong attack by tilting the controller in the wrong direction. Just try to keep track of your right hand!

There's an in-game manual in the game menu (hunter's notes I think) that lists all the weapons' different attacks and how to use them. Also, the written instruction manual that should have come in the box has a lot of information in it, too. Simply keep playing the game and experimenting- you'll get the hang of it. If you need more info just ask!
Nah I'll just use greatswords again.
Far more efficient than small one-handed swords.
I beg to differ

Most people on this forum know IM A *bleep*ING GOD WITH SNS...But they'll probably regret it I guarantee i can kill a monster faster than u can kill it using ur greatsword. Slayerking issued a challenge similar, but he came a bit short. (GG)

You down ?

I can kill it even faster with a longsword
Is that i challenge? CHALLENGE...ACCEPTED. Lets do it...against ala. Waiit...you cant do ala BAHAHAHAHAHA Uhm...how about a... UUUUUURRRRRAAAAGAAAAAAAN? I'll be on tomorrow. I'll set my time then
