Published on May 9, 2012 by Youtube.com/vice The Aokigahara Forest is the most popular site for suicides in Japan. After the novel Kuroi Jukai was published, in which a young lover commits suicide in the forest, people started taking their own lives there at a rate of 50 to 100 deaths a year. The site holds so many bodies that the Yakuza pays homeless people to sneak into the forest and rob the corpses. The authorities sweep for bodies only on an annual basis, as the forest sits at the base of Mt. Fuji and is too dense to patrol more frequently.
DarshD : What is so special about that forest? Why people get the determination to suicide in that forest? So many bodies are in there...There ought to be some ghosts present there right? Mass suicides are also connected to Satanic rituals and some cults, is it one of them?

Depression and suicide is quite common among Japanese compared to other countries. I think its because of the pressure and expectations people give us in our lives, especially with school and jobs. With that said I haven't been to Aokigahara so I can't judge (but I wanna go one day!) but we have our own "suicide spot" in my home town. Basically, like the spot at Aokigahara, its a forest beside the biggest mountain in my city, and at the spot, on the mountain is a very steep and massive cliff where people jump from. It's possible that its just an ideal spot to commit suicide, something which is very common in Japan. I've never experienced anything paranormal the few times I have been there, though I never really have spent a whole lot of time there.
So yeah the one in Aokigahara is the most famous probably because its at the foot of Mt Fuji (The biggest mountain in Japan) and also because it was referenced in a book, but there are probably many other suicide spots at the foot of large mountains here also.
Oh and by the way Aokigahara means "Field of green trees", not suicide forest, so it already has a pleasant name haha. Close enough to "Green Forest" as mentioned before Suicide Forest is just an English nickname for the place.
having the name suicide forest certainly wouldn't help, sort of promotes it. Don't know what could be causing it, could depend if the forest is close to a well populated town or what causes suicide happens in that town like unemployment etc
They need to change the name of the forest to something good. Like 'Pleasant Forest of Japan' or " Green Forest" etc.
In the 40 minute video i saw, they showed a sign that is at the enterance of the forrest. It says "Life is a gift from your parents" there is also a phone number of a stress hotline
I guess the message and the helpline number have no effect on the people going there. Would there be some paranormal force behind this? Forcing people to commit suicide in that place?

Hmm, there's definitely something in the forest that makes people suicide. That or maybe it's a popular spot for anyone who wishes to end their life. Very sad tbh, the Govt. needs to do something about it. Make an anti-suicide campaign, remove the forest or have some camps their...

It's perfectly possible that among the Japanese, who I believe have a very high suicide rate to begin with, many simply know that the forest is a common spot and decide to go there. Mob mentality at its most gruesome?

Nice to see so many replies. I was not aware that there was a documentary about it. I should check it out. The forest is a good subject to study. There is something about it that doesn't seem right. I mean, upto 100 suicides a year? That's strange. MagnetBoy very interesting share. That bridge is a lot like the forest. Why some places attract more suicides than others? Like some roads are said to have more accidents than any others?

This is a really interesting thing to read, watch and learn about. 100 deaths in a year time frame is so crazy. Even if you didn't believe in anything Paranormal, it would be hard for you to say that there wasn't something strange and unexplainable going on there.
