In my honest opinion, I wouldn't recommend getting one right now. I got the Wi-fi model on launch day, but I sold it cause everything was so expensive, the games were a bit plain, and there weren't really enough games out there for the system. I also got the feeling that developers weren't taking it seriously, especially after the Resistance: Burning Skies flop, and the fact that two major games coming out for the Vita (Black Ops and Assassin's Creed) seem to be even more portable spin-off titles, and we all know how those turn out. But anyway, that's just my opinion, however the Vita might get straightened out eventually and maybe I'll change my mind.

1. As of right now you can't play multiplayer using a 3G connection. That may change in the future though. 2. It's not free.
If my response to 2 isn't obvious enough, get one

I'm thinking of getting the vita, but first i have 2 questions. 1. On the 3g model if you only use the pay as you go internet can you still play multiplayer. 2. Are there any really terrible things about it that may make me think twice about getting one?
