Basically, do you try and duck into any pipes that you come across or try any other means of entering them? Or do you just let them go and play through the level normally?

hahaha, totally! I used to do this one every level, even if there were piranha plants coming out of them. I thought I was the only one.
Since a lot of them just have secret areas with a bunch of coins and I'm not an avid coin-collector I generally ignore them. Unless I'm under the impression they probably lead somewhere important, something has suggested I go through a pipe, there's no where else to go, or I'm having a right hard time with enemies and just need to escape for a minute.

Yup. It's been something that I've gotten use to doing over the years as I played the original games when I was really young and learned back then to check every warp pipe and it just became a habit. Sometimes rewarding and sometimes just frustrating.

I tend to go through any pipes that I can go through.
I'm really not sure what "other means" you could use to enter them though. Could you expand on that? Would be interesting to see.

First time through the sidescroller games, totally. Always interesting to see what hidden chambers you can jump into and the only way to find them out is trying to duck into every single one you come across.
Obviously became much less necessary in the third person perspective games since you can see open pipes and generally they are used a lot less.
