One thing I love about this Forum is that we have people in all points of the game, from level 150+ level-grinders to level 17 fresh-faced Arisen. One thing we all have in common (Except for the Assassins lol) is PAWNS. We hire them, we fire them, we throw them off cliffs.

So, on the merry Riftstone hunt for your next Pawn to abuse...er, I mean, befriend, what do YOU look for? Classes, Stats, whoever is the ugliest? Do you prefer a Pawn that looks well-kept but has no fashion sense, or a fashionable Pawn that's trying to take on the Ur-Dragon in Silk Lingerie with a pair of solid Gold daggers?

And in the end we all get rid of them too. WHY do you fire them? That annoying little helium-sounding voice? Their tendency to hover around your Arisen like an orbital moon? An unfortunate need to pick up EVERY ITEM even when the Lich next to them is casting that spell that makes your insides implode?

Discuss!

I really love pawns that look like they have a story. I recently had the pleasure of discovering that Mary Elizabeth Mcglynn (Major Kusanagi Ghost in the Shell) does one of the female pawn voices. That was an added bonus to the AWESOMENESS of an already well crafted pawn. The inclinations have also become extremely important to me as well. Also I pay close attention to rankings from other players in terms of usefulness and battle. Right now my favorite pawn on the Xbox 360 server right now is Dawn who is extremely helpful and even likes to throw powder kegs at the enemy when not healing.

lol, I had to read that twice before it clicked... "wild guest..." what?

Yeah, the voices. I can understand that. While I'm glad there is variety in the voices, the fact it is usually the same voice just a different pitch (especially some of the oddly pitched female voices) is beginning to wear on me. I guess I unconsciously tend to keep a pawn longer that sounds ok.

The things I look for in a pawn are: level (<=) --> vocation --> inclination --> skills

If the inclination doesn't match the vocation I keep searching.

The absolute most important thing for me when hiring a pawn is inclination. Unfortunately my 2 least favourite, acquisitor and guardian are rife and if I was to make a guess on personal experience I would say around 75% of all pawns has at least 1 of them.

...It's a slow day.

I did not realise the Mary Elizabeth Mcglynn was one of the voice actors, I adored her work on the Silent Hill soundtracks and it still amazes me that she doubles as a voice actress as well. I keep finding her name popping up everywhere I swear (And since I seem to swear a lot, that roughly translates to *bleep*ing everywhere). Apologies for the mostly off-topic reply but I felt the need to fangirl all over the mention of that name.

Which in turn brings me quite delightfully on to a relevant point of discussion for this month old topic. The pawn's voice. Since they never shut the hell up, choosing one of the voices that sounds unnatural or nasally is a major put off when it comes to keeping a pawn. I can't really tell what voice they have when hiring them as the game doesn't seem to recognise what their voice option actually is in the rift. I've hired pawns who have had completely different voices outside of the rift, a mild irritation, but if you hadn't picked up on the fact I'm picky by now, you weren't going to. =P

I haven't played DD in quite a while, maybe I'll get back into it and complete my third playthrough, switch my pawn back to Vincent, and ride merrily off into the sunset with my favourite manwhore.

Well I would ride if DD had mounts, for now I'll just content myself with lugging him around over my shoulder like an attractive se- er... ragdoll. :3

Rayxabner Might want to try actually quoting the right people there.

Any pawn called Bitey Face is an automatic hire.
Omg Bitey Face xD I ALMOST made that my Pawn's moniker. Almost. After seeing that one bandit mask with the fangy jaws on it I should have.

I honestly forgot I made this topic, and had no idea it had actually generated arguing.

Way too many of the Pawns my game likes to populate Gran Soren's streets look horrible, unfortunately. And as I am still level 55-ish, I have to agree that Skimpy Lingerie + Pretty Belly Dancer skirt does NOT make for a competent melee Strider. I so much like seeing half naked girls be one-shot by Cockatrices.

:[ Not.

I never said you're not entitled to your own opinion. I said your opinion of the way others decide to dress their pawns is dumb.
Nobody's opinion is dumb, least of all someone's in a thread, in an open forum, designed to hear out people's opinions. Like Aeirou said, keep it to a healthy discussion and quit tossing the name-calling around/trolling. It's not necessary. I'm sorry if you woke up this morning and got 1-shot by a Hobgoblin and it made you grumpy but please keep it out of our discussions, kthx.

quote Aeirou
Okay, thread back on topic please.
Ayeaye, Cap'n.

I try to hire a healing/buffing Mage and another DPS, either a Sorcerer or a Strider; I just haven't had good experiences with Pawn Warriors, which is sad, because some of them look so darn awesome. At my level (as I said, 55-ish) semi-decent gear is still a must; also, when choosing my Healer specifically I check for "lifetime" Mages, i.e. those who are max Vocation and their Magic Atk is over 800 or so (which is quite healthy at my level considering I'm packing a Sorcerer atm with over 1300). Also, no Guardians/Acquisitors. They tend to infect my Main Pawn with The Dumb and I have to drag her all the way back to the Inn to chemically change her personality again.

So yeah. No naked Pawns. No 99.9% naked Fem Pawns just for "The Look". At my level it's not appropriate and it only hinders me. Also, yeah, maybe I am a bit of a Feminist, but I just don't believe that an over-abundance of Bewbs and Bum = Competence. And yes, that is my opinion. No, I don't expect others to agree or comply, I just won't hire their skeezy lady Pawns. *shrug* It's not personal, it's just a game.

EDIT: Omg, I have no idea why the quotes came out like that, I highlighted the right things and everything but it gave them the wrong names Fixed hopefully.

Okay, thread back on topic please.

What makes you hire a pawn and what doesn't? If you get rid of a pawn in your stead, what reasons usually accompany it? Include hilarious screenshots of you firing pawns if you have any!

Anyone know who Rurikhan is? He's a gamer, playing DD. He is only lvl 20 or something, and that's my friends, why I summon his pawn. I'm allmost lvl 70, and running around with a 20 pawn, gives an extra challange.. Everyone should try it.

After I've found what I need I then check the appearance. Are they a midget? Do they resemble a hooker? Are they ugly as sin and speaking of ugly as sin are they wearing Abyssinal Armour?

If the latter three answers are yes then the pawn doesn't get hired. I can tolerate my support being two feet tall, I can't tolerate it wearing the ugliest armour in the game or wearing effectively nothing just because the pawn is female. (In an ironic twist I try to make my male pawn as scantily clad I can, at least underneath his armour, fine Cassardi Hosen and Bandages anyone?)

Fugly pawns don't help much either, it either means the player that made them put a lot of effort into making them that ugly for comedic purposes, or they just half-assed the character creation. I have this weird beef with half-assing character creation, mainly because I obsess over it. XD

At the lower levels, it makes a little more sense for pawns to be dressed in ugly armour. In a lot of cases you need the stats to survive, after the level 100 mark, that just isn't the case. I can run around in no armour at all and still survive without any trouble, because the challenge of the game pretty much dies off after 80. Luckily higher tier gear that isn't Abyssinal actually looks great so I get nice stats and nice appearance together.
Talk about contradiction and some of the dumbest reasons to not hire a pawn. So you can go and dress up your own main character and pawn as you see fit, but according to you, others can't do the same thing? So it's not okay for a female pawn to wear skimpy clothing/armor, but it's okay for your male Arisen to do so? In your opinion, the Abyssinal gear looks ugly and any pawn wearing such gear would automatically be on your to-not-hire list?

Wow, you must be someone super special to have such high standards and think so high of yourself. I should tweak my pawn to be extra attractive and not wear Abyssinal gear just so that you'll hire her and I can sleep at night:|. Sarcasm aside, you need to get off your high chair and consider that not everyone cares about fashion in a video game like you do.
This is where I see a problem starting. If you guys can level this out to a healthy debate then I will allow it, but if I start seeing more insults then we'll have to take more appropriate action.

In the spirit of debate, however, Shadow has a point. If a pawn is ugly, be it dress or design, I wont hire it. I've gotten to the point in my game where I don't need the extra help and I can be more selective about who I hire. When I do hire a pawn, I want the pawn to look great and be great. Maelstrom spam irritates me because I cant see through it.. so I wont hire pawns that use it. I don't think any of the longbow skills for ranger are any good besides tenfold arrow... so I wont hire pawns set with the useless bow skills. If I have constructive criticism on a pawn, I'll throw the creator a message. I receive thank you messages all the time and some of those pawns end up being my favorites.

I have my pawn set as a mage with all affinities and spellscreen. When I get all the items that lower cast time on her, I'm going to give her healing too.. she's a booster set up for low levels on my friends list. He damage comes from her 1.5k damage staff. She helps but isn't complete overkill. She's not going to solo a drake so she doesn't ruin the experience.

Think of it this way.. you play the game how you want but your pawn is a product of your play. A product that other people can choose whether or not to use. Now, with thousands of other pawns, why choose yours? Sometimes stats will be enough but when two pawns have the same stats than the more attractive pawn will always get hired. Hell, you could have similar stats with the pretty pawn being lower and 9 times out of 10 that will be the hired pawn.

When you go to walmart to pick up.. i dont know, some mac and cheese. You have the mac and cheese from craft in the pretty blue box for like 97 cents. Right next to it is the walmart brand for 57 cents. You are probably still going to buy the kraft box because you're it looks better. The only time you wouldnt buy kraft, to save money, is if you werent going to be eating it.

I also believe that overused armor loses value. Seeing too many pawns in abyUr armor or the bandit set means that it's easy to get. In which case, I go out of my way to hire the pawns with sets that are harder to get. For example, I spent 3 hours farming chests for Carmine Breeches. Those pants only spawn in 5 chests throughout the game and all of those chests are in everfall. 2% drop.

AbyUr armor is 100% drop upon killing the Ur Dragon online. Which do you kill is harder to get? You hit level 80 and the Ur Dragon is like child's play with too much health but that chest drop is still 2%.
