Hello mates. This is my first time building a computer from scratch and I need your assistance. I want to watch movies, surf the web, and game mostly. This is the build I am thinking of:

$170 i5 2500K
http://www.microcenter.com/search/search_results.phtml?Ntt=i5+2500k&submit.x=0&submit.y=0
$150 Sapphire Radeon 6870
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102908&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-RSSDailyDeals-_-na-_-na&AID=10521304&PID=4176827&SID=1dhuq2gbwgdsp
$122 ASRock Z68
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157271&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-RSSDailyDeals-_-na-_-na&AID=10521304&PID=4176827&SID=15ztfguiyidka
$70 600W PSU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139028&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-RSSDailyDeals-_-na-_-na&AID=10521304&PID=4176827&SID=1e516draf8wju
$30 8GB Kingston ram
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0360526

I have an old SATA hard drive and DVD drive I'm going to reuse to save some money. Any ideas on a good quality cheap case (it would be cool if it had blue LED lights inside)?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

As Vegita said, that's not a hard drive, just an enclosure. If you'll be buying a hard drive then go for the cheapest 7200rpm drive you can get with the space you'll need (likely 500gb - 1tb).

I'd maybe go for a cheaper PSU or at least for that price a modular one, I'm a huge fan of Corsair but on your budget it's a bit pricey.

Definitely go for that Microcenter deal if there's any around you, too.

As for OS, you'll want Windows 7 64-bit OEM. You can't get Mac OSX unless you get it illegally, and Linux is great but for your use, not so much.

Also, go with the cheapest 8gb of RAM you can. Depending on what games you'll be playing I'd say either get a Radeon HD 7770 or a 6870.

Not sure if you do have a Microcenter you could access? If so you can get a 970 with a 950SB ASRock for less, the CPU for less and likely the rest of the build a bit off. :/ If not then it doesn't look bad but I'd have to warn the HDD you picked isn't actually a drive, it's an enclosure for a drive.

Actually AMD would still be cheaper this month through Microcenter vs Newegg, the 6100 is 119 there vs the 139 and there's no waiting period for it. On top of that they're also offering $40 off of select AMD boards if you buy it with a chip.

FX6100 - $119
Asus M5A97 - $84 - $40 - 44.95

They thrive on spanking newegg for critical pricing.
Okay I need help here. I took Ohmycaptain's suggestion and chose AMD over Intel. I got:

Case:
NZXT Guardian 921 RB 921RB-001-BL Black SECC steel chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

AMD Motherboard:
ASRock 970DE3/U3S3 AM3+ AMD 770 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

Video Card:
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity (100315L )
Comes with a free copy of Dirt3, whoohoo

Power Supply Thing:
CORSAIR Builder Series CX600 V2 600W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply
I'm guessing it's the power supply, not completely sure

RAM:
Kingston HyperX 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Mhttp://www.neoseeker.com/forums/17/t1734037-budget-600-gaming-computer-build/#emory Model KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX

AMD Chip:
AMD FX-6100 Zambezi 3.3GHz Socket AM3+ 95W Six-Core Desktop Processor FD6100WMGUSBX

OS (would I be better off getting some Mac OS, or Linux OS?)
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - OEM

and finally, Hard Drive:
SANS DIGITAL MobileSTOR MS1UTP 1 x Hot-Swappable 3.5" Drive Bays USB 3.0 & eSATA 3.5" SATA Hard Drive to SuperSpeed USB 3.0 / 2.0 / eSATA Enclosure

It all comes to a grand total of $820, closer to $780 if you count the savings. Is this a good rig? Good deal? Is everything compatible? I just want to run everything on medium settings tbh.

Do you have an OS? If not you'll need Windows 7.

On such a tight budget I'd swap out an intel build for an AMD build.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103962

^ $10 off on top of that for $130 total until the 17th.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157305

^ Good motherboard at a much cheaper price for about $70 w/ shipping.

So, swap out your cpu and mobo and replace with that. That brings you to $450, $550 w/ windows 7 64-bit OEM.

For a case I'd say maybe;

or

If you want to go a little cheaper the NZXT Source 210 is a phenomenal case for the price. The reason I went with all NZXT cases is because in the sub $75 range, they're the best, and they offer good cable management options in their lower end cases, which is rare to find. No blue LED's in the source, though.
