Hey, just looking for a quick opinion on a computer I plan to build for my parents, so the worst they will ever do is watch videos.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3 Motherboard

CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K

RAM: Corsair CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3

Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 1TB ST31000524AS

Graphics Card: ASUS Radeon HD6670 1GB GDDR3

Optical: LG GH24NS90 24x SATA DVD-RW Drive OEM

Case: CoolerMaster Centurion 5 II (include 500W PSU, see below)

PSU: Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus RS-500-PCAR-J3 500W ATX12V V2.3

OS: Windows 7 Professional

The PSU maybe a little on the cheap side, I think. Any recommendations,

Many thanks in advanced.

And I'm pretty sure what PureOCJim is suggesting is way too much of an overkill for their need.
That is why I suggested to post a budget. Pretty sure is assuming... He posted a system well in lines of my suggesttion. Now assumming (LOL) his budget is pleanty leaving him plenty of headroom for future technology.

Really the best option for their situation would be to buy an i5 laptop. Just make sure it has a huge screen and 2 hard drives, so that it would be possible to replace one with an SSD.

im pretty sure 2/3gb RAM is more than enough for that...

I would suggest getting one of the athlon cpus or the phenom x2 II cpus. They are cheaper and also, I would recommend 2/3GB of RAM. 4GB maximum. Also, if you are going to get a gpu, then get something like the ATI Radeon HD 4XXX series or even lower. Or if you want something that can still play games at medium then get the 9800GT. Since 2007 till now, its always been exceeding my expectation of it.
Why? phenom II's have more L3 cache and perform better. SandyBridge wipes the snot out of both....... 2 or 3 G of Ram will not be enough.....

I would post a budget. it is much easier to build around a price tag. i3, i5..... the i7 2600K would be best for the future IMO and do not skimp on the PSU.

Ooh, cheaper. I like the sound of that.

quote Randome
So why an i5? Watching videos is not extreme gaming. And the "K" means that it's the overclocking-friendly version. Get an i3. The cheapest one.

Why a video card? The integrated GPU in the i3 should be good enough. If you think they really will need a video card, then get the cheapest one.

Why Windows 7 Professional? Get the home edition, unless your parents want to use it for work related things.
You really think integrated graphics on i3 is good enough including without a graphics card.

Windows 7 Pro because I already have a licence for it.

Agree that if this is for watching videos/web surfing then you can save a lot of money.

The Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus series is really bad so that needs changing.
I can give a recommendation if I know where you are buying from.
Hmm, OK. http://pccasegear.com/ (Australia).

Is mainly because it came as a pairing: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=25_31&products_id=13521

That would be appreciated greatly.

how much money are you willing to spend on the build, for starters? im guessing more than youll need, though.
Indeed. Seems like it.

Thanks for the replies, any more thoughts would be appreciated.

450 watts? oh i think you could grab an even lower rated one...but i think you will find a lot of 3 or 450 units at cheaper prices, than, say, 250w
