On 5th July 2011, Liverpool opted to not give legend 'King' Kenny Dalglish the Liverpool manager's job on a permanent basis, instead opting for 25 year old Manuel Morales in a sensational move which shocked the whole of Merseyside and much of England as well. The young Panamanian had a big job on his hands, with a return to European football the first aim for the young man.

He came into Liverpool with very much his own ideas, scrapping Liverpool's usual tactics in place of a rather controversial 4-3-3 which would see Liverpool return to their pass-and-move roots. Many managers thought that this football was boring, others credited Morales for always moving the ball around. What no-one could deny was that it was working for Liverpool.

His first order of business was to re-shape the club in his own image as he began his search for a long-term career at the fallen giants. His first order of business was to completely alter his backroom staff, terminating 18 contracts by mutual consent, including a complete re-vamp of the club's scouting network. He also brought in 24 new faces to try and improve Liverpool's fantastic training set-up. He had youth coach Mark Hulse become a club fitness coach, but would lose him to Tottenham in March, but replaced him with reputable Italian Gian Nicola Bisciotti. He also released 10 youth players, with only Emmanuel Mendy going on to find himself a new club.

Liverpool already had a small squad and the releases had made it even smaller. However, Morales would only add 2 new faces during the summer. The club's new tactic would see Lucas Leiva occupy an Anchor Man role and with no real backup Mahamadou Diarra arrived on a free transfer. He was joined a week later by Chivas' highly-rated striker Erick Torres in a deal worth £3.4million. He also oversaw the £500'000 sale of Brad Jones to Wigan as well as Conor Coady, Andre Wisdom, John Flanagan and Jack Robinson leaving on loan.

The first half of the 2011/12 season went very well under the new management, although an opening day defeat at Norwich saw many people question the new manager's ability very early on. They went on to drop points against Chelsea and Man City in the first half of the season, as well as surprise defeats against Sunderland and Stoke and a disappointing 0-0 draw against Aston Villa. However, a 3-0 win over Manchester United was definitely something to savour. They also went on a good cup run, going out in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup against Everton in a disappointing 2-0 defeat. Going into the new year though Liverpool were surprise title contenders.

In January Liverpool continued to try and improve their team, signing Fabian Delph on loan from Aston Villa and the signing of highly-rated Spaniard Isaac Cuenca following his release from Barcelona. They also allowed Maxi Rodriguez leave on loan for the rest of the season as they prepared for a title run-in.

Liverpool definitely struggled in the second-half of the season, with the small squad definitely telling as the season wore on. They drew 5 games which Liverpool fans would have definitely put down as wins, with Norwich, QPR, Fulham, Wolves and Aston Villa stopping them and those points would definitely tell by the end of the season. They also suffered defeats against Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United, as well as defeat on the final day of the season at Swansea. They suffered cup misery again in the quarter-final of the FA Cup, this time a poor performance proving to be West Brom's delight. Despite the points dropped Liverpool fans could cheer big wins against Chelsea and Manchester City in the second half of the season as they finished in a very respectable 3rd place.

After a successful first season under the young Panamanian the Liverpool board offered him a new 5 year deal on £73'000 p/week, with the future looking very bright on Merseyside. For the new season, Morales would have to secure Champions' League football for a second successive season and saw him delivered a £30million war chest to ensure the continued development at Anfield.

With big-money moves all around England, including the £35million move of Eden Hazard to Chelsea and Tottenham paying Napoli £32million for clinical striker Edinson Cavani, Liverpool fans were hoping for a big money moves of their own, but they were to be disappointed. Morales began with removing the deadwood around Anfield, allowing Doni, Bellamy, Eccleston, Downing, Cole and Carroll to leave, as well as Diarra after just a year at the club. He would also later allow Gulacsi and Maxi Rodriguez depart, while allowing Cuenca join German giants Schalke 04 on loan for the season.

As for transfers in, Morales continued to look for young, exuberent players to fit into his tactic. Carlos Fierro and Adryan joined up with the club with deals agreed last season, while the bosmans of Jaaskelainen and Sanogo arrived to pick up numbers. He also brought in youngsters Jaap Lemmens from PSV and Robbie Cotton on a free transfer with Morales looking to secure the future of the club before the present. He did look at the lack of goals last season and tried to improve on it. Bas Dost, Chucho Benitez and Scott Sinclair came in, with the club lacking poachers and after Dirk Kuyt's 20+ goals last season, needed a target man to back him up. Fabian Delph had also clearly impressed on his loan spell and signed permanently, while young midfielder Marco Verratti signed from Pescara. Fans were definitely a little bit sceptical going into the new season, would these players see the club continue on their road to become England's dominant force once again?

Kuyt seals 200th as Reds steal it at Molineux

Liverpool came into this game with just 1 win from their last 5 Premier League matches and were against last season's surprise package, with Wolves finishing 6th and have currently qualified from their Europa League group. The game looked to be heading for another draw, but the late introduction of Scott Sinclair changed the game as the 23 year old set up Kuyt twice in the final minutes.

Liverpool could have had the game won in the first half, but had to settle for a slender half time lead when Gerrard teed up Adam who blasted a low effort into the bottom corner, his first goal since the opening day victory over QPR. Wolves came out battling in the second half and quickly got back into the game when Roger Johnson closed down a poor Suarez pass and Fletcher ran at Skrtel before powering one past Reina, who could only get a hand to it as it flew into the back of the net. With time running out Liverpool brought on Scott Sinclair and the Englishman didn't waste any time getting into the thick of things. Suarez found him unmarked on a counter attack and his low cross found Kuyt unmarked at the back post to tap in the winner. Sinclair and Kuyt then teamed up again after Sinclair was found by a fantastic Enrique pass. His cross was blocked by Tomkins and ended up behind Kuyt, but it didn't stop him from powering it first time into the top corner for his 200th career league goal and his 14th of the season. A valuable 3 points then which sees Liverpool move 3rd, temporarily at least with Manchester United taking on Aston Villa tomorrow.

Reds fight back to triumph in Italy

Liverpool came back from 2-1 down to beat Juventus as they qualified as the only team to win all 6 of their group matches. 2 fantastic goals from Delph and Kuyt got Liverpool not the game, while it was won by Dani Pacheco, who continued to put pressure on the mis-firing Luis Suarez.

Liverpool were quick to open the scoring when Fabian Delph's long shot was deflected off Pacheco and into the top corner, beyond the wrong-footed Manninger, who was in goal in place of the injured Buffon. Juventus were quick to pull back into the game though as Douglas Costa took De Ceglie's corner on the turn before passing into the net from close range. Juventus made a half-time substitution, replacing Elia for Schelotto and it was quick to pay off, De Ceglie's cross from deep finding the winger unmarked at the back post to nod into the net.

Liverpool were by far the better team on the night and were back on level terms minutes later, Delph turning provider to play in Kuyt, who's shot hit the crossbar and bounced out, only for the spin to take it back into the net. It was his 4th Champions League goal of the season and he was involved in the 3rd as Chiellini brought him down on the edge of the box. Pacheco stepped up to take the free-kick and just chipped it over the wall and into the top corner, beyond Manninger's reach. Pacheco then helped complete the victory with a powerful cross bouncing off the head of Chiellini and into the Juventus goal. A comfortable victory then as Liverpool go into the last 16 as the form team with the prospect of Atletico Madrid, Lyon, Dinamo Moscow, Paris Saint-Germain FC Kobenhavn or Panathinaikos in the last 16. The team they will want to avoid though will be Barcelona, who finished 2nd behind Fenerbahce in Group D.

Sinclair rescues point at White Hart Lane

Liverpool had substitute Scott Sinclair to thank for snatching point in a well-fought game against Tottenham as they once again missed the chance to leapfrog Manchester United in the league after they were held to a goalless draw at Blackburn. Manchester City's 3-0 win over Burnley also saw Liverpool slip to 4 points behind the leaders while Tottenham remain 2 points behind the 4th place team with a game in hand.

It was a very even fixture with Liverpool dominating the early exchanges, although Tottenham would be delighted to find Dirk Kuyt off form and eventually substituted at half-time. As the game wore on Tottenham began to get a foothold in the game and eventually broke the deadlock with just under 20 minutes left to play; Walker played it back to Sandro who hit it first time from 25 yards as the ball sailed into the top corner, a goal worthy of winning any match. Liverpool took that chance to replace Benitez with Sinclair and it paid dividends in the end, a long Spearing ball originally intended for Dost instead found its way to Sinclair who attacked the goal before finishing well past Gomes. A point that will feel like 3 for Liverpool as they fall behind in the title race, although will have to quickly re-group with Juventus their mid-week challenge.

Tottenham [4-4-1-1]: Heurelho GOMES, Kyle WALKER, Younes KABOUL, Ledley KING (c), Leighton BAINES, Jimmy BRIAND, Scott PARKER, Tom HUDDLESTONE (SANDRO), Gareth BALE (Michael DAWSON), Luka MODRIC (Rafael VAN DER VAART), Jermaine DEFOE

Everton hang on as Liverpool fail to go 2nd

It was Liverpool's game in hand, but a fantastic Nikica Jelavic strike denied them the chance to move onto the same points as league leaders Manchester City, with Dirk Kuyt rescuing a point at Anfield. Liverpool dominated over the 90 minutes but couldn't find a winner, thus staying in 4th, a point behind Manchester United and Chelsea and 2 points behind City.

The game started off very evenly and it was Everton who took the lead when Grindheim played in Jelavic on the edge of the box, who held off the challenge from Agger before rifling into the bottom corner beyond Reina. Liverpool were quick to pull one back through top goalscorer Kuyt who tackled Yobo before forcing a save from Howard, but once again showed his work ethic to quickly pick up the loose ball, hold off Yobo for a second time and curl one beyond Howard from close range. Kuyt and co. had plenty of chances to win the game, Luis Suarez missing the best chance after a wonderful cross from Benitez found the Uruguayan unmarked at the back post, but he could only header it over. The draw for Everton means they're just a point from the top half as they continue their improvement under manager Alex McLeish.

Liverpool [4-3-3]: Pepé REINA, Glen JOHNSON, Martin SKRTEL, Daniel AGGER, José ENRIQUE, Jay SPEARING, Steven GERRARD (c), Charlie ADAM (Fabian DELPH), Christian BENITEZ (Erick TORRES), Dirk KUYT, Luis SUAREZ (Dani PACHECO)
Everton [4-2-3-1]: Tim HOWARD, Tony HIBBERT, Joseph YOBO, Sylvian DISTIN, Adrian ALDRETE (Phil NEVILLE), Marouane FELLAINI, Jack RODWELL, Christian GRINDHEIM, Tim CAHILL (c), Victor ANICHEBE, Nikica JELAVIC*

Delph hat-trick helps Liverpool in 5-0 romp

Liverpool enjoyed a fantastic second half at Anfield to see the club move back up to 4th with a game in hand after a lacklustre first half from both sides. Blackburn never once looked like getting into the game and was more a case of how many by the end of the game. Managers Steve Kean and Manuel Morales have never seen eye-to-eye but the former may think twice about making comments in the future after his side was humbled by a confident Liverpool team who secured their first Premier League win in 3 attempts.

After a first half dominated by Liverpool, but few goal scoring opportunities, it was the home side who came out fighting in the second half and quickly took the lead through Fabian Delph, Enrique's cut-back finding the young midfielder on the edge of the area before firing one into the box, to take a deflection off Scott Dann and loop into the top corner beyond Robinson. His second was the best of the game shortly after, Suarez's initial shot was blocked by Whittaker, only for Delph to hit it first time on the edge of the box as it flew past a stranded Robinson. Henderson's pass then made the 3rd, a defence-splitting ball finding Delph unmarked as he was allowed to run into the box before firing across Robinson and finding the post and then the net. In the 77th minute Liverpool made two changes, replacing Dost with Kuyt and man of the match Delph earned a standing ovation as he was replaced by Gerrard and quickly Kuyt was finding his name on the scoresheet for his 10th of the season; Enrique's cross coming off Orr and finding the Dutchman unmarked to power in from 6 yards. Scott Sinclair then got his rewards minutes later with Henderson playing another fantastic through ball for the striker, who wrong-footed Robinson before driving past the helpless goalkeeper. A comfortable victory then as Liverpool prepare for the Merseyside derby in mid-week in the best possible fashion, and certainly Fabian Delph didn't do himself any harm in putting himself in contention.

Liverpool [4-3-3]: Pepé REINA, Martin KELLY, Jamie CARRAGHER (c), Daniel AGGER (Danny WILSON), José ENRIQUE, Marco VERRATTI, Jordan HENDERSON, Fabian Delph* (Steven GERRARD), Scott SINCLAIR, Bas DOST (Dirk KUYT), Luis SUAREZ

Comfortable win sees Reds top group

Liverpool have won their Champions League group after a comfortable Anfield victory over Dinamo Bucharest last night, with Juventus drawing 1-1 with Benfica. It was also a fantastic night for Dani Pacheco, who netted his first ever Liverpool goal in the fixture.

Liverpool took the lead after just 17 minutes, Adam's corner finding Coates at the back post, with the big Uruguayan towering above Michel Platini to head Liverpool into the lead. It was doubled just before half-time, Adam's head from a long Robinson pass bouncing into the path of Pacheco, who remain composed to slot it past Mihu. The tie was then dead and buried when Erick Torres took the ball across Luchin before firing back across Mihu into the top corner. It sees Liverpool able to relax now ahead of their final group match against Juventus in Italy.

Liverpool [4-4-2]: Pepé REINA, Glen JOHNSON, Sebastian COATES, Danny WILSON, Jack ROBINSON, Jay SPEARING, Jordan HENDERSON (Steven GERRARD), Charlie ADAM*, Erick TORRES (Scott SINCLAIR), Dirk KUYT (c), Dani PACHECO
Dinamo Buc. [4-4-2]: Marius MIHU, Lucian NADABAN, Srgian LUCHIN, Alexandru AMARIAI, Petru UNGUREANU, Claudiu BIRO (Marius GNANDT), Ionel DANCIULESCU (c) (Cristinel BLAGA), Catalin MUNTEANU, Andrei DRIDA, Marius NICULAE (Valer GHEORGHE), Michel PLATINI
