hmm.. maybe the parts of the map that are covered with ice aren't underneath a giant glacier. maybe those regions are as they were in b&w but everything's icy.
Ash is supposedly still only ten or eleven so itd only make sense that Iris is around that age. If I were ten I wouldnt be traveling with some 18 year olds.
I'm pretty sure Brock is old.
The ice is definitely rather see through so I really see those places that it covers being accessible. I just don't know when or what they'll be like.

That may be why the ice is so crudely placed upon the official map, but that doesn't mean that Unova isn't actually frozen over. Why use ice at all if it weren't?
I thought it was pretty obvious. It's simply an effect to tie in with the whole theme of Kyurem and their more important role, ice etc. Other examples include the logos themselves and promotional designs.

Why not just use the usual cloud cover? I expect that those regions of Unova will indeed be frozen over up to a certain point in the game, but then will thaw and things will be like they had never been frozen (such is the prerogative of video games).

He still could have died. x3 Oh, I didn't realise Iris was so young. I assumed she was older.

If the ice melts, won't there be ten Gym Leaders instead of the usual eight?
Well i think if the ice melted the two older gym leaders wouldn't just be thawed out of the ice and put back in the league. Nor do I think theyll just waltz back into town and become leaders again.

Well, frozen or not, I believe the areas covered with ice will remain accessible. Does not make sense or purpose if it's not.
