This caught me completely unawares, but after I edited all my posts to this colour in this thread, Whelan gave me grief when he told me that editing old posts that contained notifications re-sent the notification. As mentioned at the top of the post, I had absolutely no clue that editing old posts re-sends notifications.
Because of this, and the fact that Whelan got a hefty load of notifications from me, should the notification be prevented from being re-sent when the notification post is edited?

What did you guys find? I was only notified once in Red's post but I haven't been on all day. I promise that being re-notified when someone edits a post has happened to me before.
only got one. however, i did not check my notifications until now. now that i have reset the counter, i should get a notification if you edit again
I believe this is the trick, Redemption. If the person being notified hasn't checked their notifications between the time the mention was made and the time the post is edited, there is no second or third notification. If the post is edited after you've checked the notification, then you'll get it again.
In fact, let's test this theory real quick. Hiigaran, could you PM me after you receive this notification? I'll edit this post afterward to see if you get a new one.
Edit: Testing.

hiigaranNarphinean - every time someone posts a bug about this we test and cannot reproduce it. From the very beginning, literally version 1.0.0, notifications were designed NOT to send on edit, unless the edit was perhaps a STRONGER notification than the last (eg a quote vs mention).
The system does NOT always renotify with each edit. To prove this I will edit this post and you will see that you only ever get one notification.
The problem seems to be that intermittently we get reports of renotifications, yet nobody has been able to properly document how to reproduce it .
Edit: In this edit the only person I will notify is VeGiTAX2. Second Edit: fixing a typo. No one should be notified. Third Edit: Rune Ripper should be notified.
A total of 3 edits were made to this post. If this bug existed and was consistent hiigaran would get 3 Notifications. Veg would get 2.

Rune Ripper
I quite like having secret notifications in posts, this way I don't have to randomly incorporate a members name in the post just to notify them.

simple solution to a more complex problem. i like it. as long as the notifications are disabled by default.

Unfortunately we would need to change the edit function to work like an append function instead, at that point it would also defeat the purpose of editing as you'd be injecting new material into the existing post without the ability to modify the old one. :/
As it stands the system would need to have a way to compare edits and only act upon the changed fields. That solution though is more of a human review one and less a computer based one. I guess if you really didn't want to notify people maybe offer the option to disable notifications when you submit your edit?
So even in a quick edit you could click
Quick Edit | Hide Edit Form | [x] disable notifications
