The Tale of Scott Mahon; Hero or Zero?

Edgar Street; My new homeToday I was offered the job at Hereford United after I had sent off an application to begin my football management career, having just passed my coaching degree. I was delighted to be accepted and drove down to Edgar Street immediately from my hometown of Billingham, a small town around 15 minutes away from Middlesbrough. Once I had finally got there, I spoke to the chairman Mr. David Keyte about my contract, transfer funds and the objectives for the season. Below is my contract detials, the transfer and wage budget I have been given and the objectives I have to achieve with the team this season.

February 2013We didn't perform too badly this month although I am convinced that our form could have been a little bit better in a few of out games. I am hoping that the players will take the positives of this month and continue them into the coming months but also to turn the negatives into positives.
We started the month off away to Torquay United and I knew this was going to be a tough game, especially with our record not being very good against them but I was hoping we could maybe push on and get a point. We didn't play too badly and only lost the game 3-2 which in my books isn't a bad result, I was hoping we could have snatched a point though and looked like doing so.
We then hosted Crewe and this was a game that I thought was going to be tough because Crewe are a good side but I felt we could get a point out of the game. The players battled very well and managed to get a well earned point and send the fans home happy.
Then we had a trip to Leyton Orient and I wasn't expecting to get anything from this game despite beaten them earlier in the season. We were well beaten and I have to say Leyton Orient deserved it but our players did do their best to be fair to them, it just wasn't our day.
We then had a 1-0 defeat at home to Port Vale even though I thought we could get a point from the game but our record has been poor against them since I took over. Our final game of the month saw us play a tough Macclesfield away but we pushed on and were able to get a point from the game.
I was still very confident that we would beat the drop and we are currently sitting in 20th place and 4 points from the drop zone in the nPower League Two. So we need to keep picking up the points and climbing up the table and I will do anything I can to keep this club were they belong, in this division next season.
Below is a review of my personal objectives for the month of February 2013;
- Pick up 2 points in the league (Achieved - Total, 4)
Below is my personal objective for the month of March 2013;
- Pick up 5 points in the league

January 2013We finally found some good form this month as we remained unbeaten throughout and begun climbing up the table, a run I was hoping could go on for a while to come. I also sold Benoit Dalibard because I deemed him to be surplus to requirements, he left for Darling for £2.5k.
Our first game of the month saw us play Accrington at home, a game I was confident we could get at least a point from and the players proved me right. We played well and managed to earn a point in a close game at 1-1.
Next we hosted Yeovil, who I thought would hammer us to be perfectly honest but the players performed admirably and managed to win the game 3-2. A very surprising result but one that was very pleasing indeed.
We then traveled to Morecambe and this was another game I felt that we could get at least a point from and the players played very well to earn a point. We drew the game 1-1 and I felt this was the start of a good run, which I was hoping at this point would last until the end of the month.
Another away day saw us getting on the team coach to Crawley which I believed was another tough game but the players really played very well and won tremendously. We managed to gain all three points on Crawley's turf in a 2-1 scoreline and I was very pleased that the players could prove myself and all the pundits wrong.
Edgar Street was where we played our next game as we welcomed Exeter City to our ground for what I thought would be another tough encounter but yet again the players did very well. We managed to win the game 3-1, a scoreline that extremely pleased our home fans and sent them home with huge smiles on their faces.
The final game of the month was against Dagenham & Redbridge at home and we managed to earn a good point in a bore draw. The final scoreline was 0-0 and the only thing that disappointed me was our inability to put the ball in the back of the net.
We had moved up the table and are now in 19th place in the nPower League Two. I was hoping that the good form from this month could continue for the rest of the season but I know that is a tough ask. I am hoping this will have lifted the player's confidence though and make them believe in themselves a little bit more.
Below is a review of my personal objectives for the month of January 2013;
- Pick up 3 points in the league (Achieved - Total, 12)

December 2012This month could have been a lot better but I am pleased that we are still sitting outside the relegation places but I know we need to keep picking up the points. I am hoping to prove to the fans that I am the right man for the job here but I will be honest, its a very hard task with the resources available to me.
Our first game of the festive period saw us face our rivals, Cheltenham at home and I was hoping to get at least a point from the game to keep the fans happy. I was really pleased with the players performance in this game and it lifted the morale of the squad a bit.
Our next game was a trip to Barnet, a game I felt we could have got three points from but to be fair to them, they played well and we simply didn't turn up. I was angered that the players couldn't even get a point from the game.
Then we had another away game as we traveled to Mansfield which I knew was a tough game but I felt we could have got a point from the game. It was a close game and we were only beaten 1-0 but I was disappointed in the lack of finishing in front of goal as we had plenty of chances.
The last game of December saw us face Bury at home and although we beat them in pre-season I wasn't very hopeful coming into this one as they are on very good form. We were well beaten in a 2-0 loss and to be honest I was just thankful the scoreline wasn't bigger.
So after this month we had slipped a place and were now just above the relegation zone in the nPower League Two but I was confident we could pick up our form and climb away from the drop zone. I want to make sure the players heads don't drop but I know one thing, I ain't leaving this club.
Below is a review of my personal objectives for the month of December 2012;
- Pick up 6 points in the league (Not Achieved - Total, 3)

November 2012This month was a hell of a lot better apart from our surprise exit in the FA Cup which I was far from pleased with but it gives me time to focus on the league. Morale is raising at the club and I aim to keep it this way by keeping this form going and bringing points into the club. I also signed Rakish Bingham on loan from Barnsley for 3 months.
We started the month off at home to Burton Albion and although I was hoping to get a point from this game we ended up losing 4-1, a result that largely disappointed me. I was hoping the team would react from this in the next game.
We then traveled to Aldershot and again I was hoping to get a point from the game as I knew it would be a tricky fixture but the players played very well. We managed to win the game 3-1 and bring the full 3 points home for the club.
Next we had a home tie against Ebbsfleet in the first round of the FA Cup and although we weren't expected to get past this round, we should have against as weak an opponent as Ebbsfleet. We lost the game 2-0 and I couldn't help but blast the team after the game for their poor performance.
Our final game of the month was an away trip to AFC Wimbledon and I will be honest, I wasn't even expecting a point from this game. However the players put in a top class performance and we managed to take the three points away from the game in a 1-0 win.
We were beginning to climb up the table and I was hoping that we could keep this form going in the next month and bring more points into the club. We were too good a team to get relegated in my opinion and I was going to strive to keep this team in the nPower League Two for a second successive season. I was enjoying my time here and I wanted to give the fans something to cheer about.
Below is a review of my personal objectives for the month of November 2012;
- Pick up 2 points in the league (Achieved - Total, 6)
- Progress through to the next round of the FA Cup (Not Achieved)

October 2012This month was a complete disaster and it was one I wanted to move on from very quickly. I signed a new striker and defender on free transfers who were Torbjørn Agdestein and Maxime Blanchard who were the fourth players I had brought into the club this season. I was hoping that they could help change the fortunes of the club as we were on a very bad run at the minute.
We started the month off with a trip to Plymouth Argyle and I was hoping that we could maybe snatch a point from this game but it wasn't to be. We were well beaten by our opposition 3-1 and I wasn't very happy with the player's performance.
We then had another away game as we traveled to Aldershot in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and due to their good form I wasn't expecting to get through to the next round. The players battled well though and we managed to take them to penalties where unfortunately we were beaten.
Next we had a home game against Bradford where I thought we could have at least got a point but it wasn't to be and we were hammered 3-0. I blasted the players after the game as I felt this wasn't acceptable.
Then we had two consecutive 2-0 defeats as we played Rotherham away and Bristol Rovers at home. This month was getting worse and worse as it went along so I wanted to end the month and move on.
Our final game of the month was at home to Fleetwood and after our current form and their current form I was expecting them to rip us apart. However, the players performed admirably and we were unlucky not to have gotten a point from the game as we were beaten 2-1.
This month was a complete disaster and the pressure was really starting to get to me but I was going to stick at it and try to turn this clubs fortunes round. We had slipped into the relegation zone in the nPower League Two, a position this club should be comfortably away from in my opinion but the lack of money at the club doesn't help the situation.
Below is a review of my personal objectives for the month of October 2012;
- Pick up 3 points in the league (Not Achieved - Total, 0)
Below is my personal objective for the month of November 2012;

September 2012This month I was hoping to build on the solid start we made to this season but we were hit with injuries and poor fitness, along with poor performances in a poor month for us. I asked the board to find me a parent club this month but they could not find a suitable team like the last time I requested this from them.
We started the month off with a defeat against recently relegated Exeter and although I wasn't expecting to get anything from the game, the players performance was what upset me. The only plus from the game was that young striker, Giorgio Sneekes got his first goal for the club in his debut match and I was pleased for the young lad.
We then hosted Torquay which I knew was a very tough game but I was hoping because of us being at home we could have gained a point but we really didn't turn up. We were hammered 5-1 with Ryan Connolly getting the only goal for our team.
Next we had another tough game as we traveled to Crewe Alexandra and this was a game that they were considered huge favorites so again I wasn't expecting much from the game. We were beaten 3-1 and our fans seemed to be getting a bit restless at the recent performances and I really don't blame them.
We then had a tough Tuesday night fixture as we played Leyton Orient and managed to surprisingly get a point from the game in a 1-1 draw on our home turf. Akpo Sodje was our scorer and I was hoping he could get many more this season.
We then had two defeats as we were beaten 3-0 by Macclesfield before being beaten by Port Vale in a 1-0 scoreline away from home. These were two bad performances and two results I wanted to forget and move on from.
Our performance this month was awful and we flew down the league and found ourselves three places above the relegation zone in the nPower League Two. I was going to switch the tactics round a bit this next month to try and find a winning formula, now I just have to wait and see.
Below is a review of my personal objectives for the month of August 2012;
- Pick up 5 points in the league (Not Achieved - Total, 1)
- Ask board to find a parent club (Achieved)

The Tale of Scott Mahon; Hero or Zero?
August 2012I was hoping that the team could start the new campaign off well and pick up a few points to start building a safe mid-table position even at these early stages. Due to the poor financial state of the club I was forced into selling my best Central Defender, Martin Camaño to Chesterfield for £30,000 to reduce the wage bill a bit.
We started the season off with an away trip to Accrington Stanley, a team that had beaten us the last time we played them and many were predicting them to beat us again. I stuck by the lads and told them that if they played their natural game we could win and it paid off as we hammered them 4-2.
Next we faced a tough away cup tie against Bristol City, a game I was expecting to get absolutely no where in but I wanted the lads to give it their best shot. We were battered all day long and the score could have been a lot bigger than 4-1 but I just wanted to move on from this result quickly.
We then faced Crawley at Edgar Street, who we drew with in our last encounter and I was hoping that the team could pull off another good result and hopefully get a point from the game. It wasn't to be as we were beaten 2-0 by a confident Crawley team.
We then played recently relegated, Yeovil Town which was a team that the pundits were saying would comfortably see off my men. As usual when the pressure is placed on the opposition we were able to hold off Yeovil in a 0-0 draw at their own ground, a great result.
Our final game of August saw us play Morecambe at home, a team that had previously beat us twice under my management and I wanted to change that this time round. The players put in a very good performance and managed to see off our opposition in a 1-0 win and brought us 7 points out of a possible 12 this month.
We were doing well in the league so far and I was hoping the team could keep their performances going over the next few months to build a strong points tally from the off. We are currently just outside the playoffs in the nPower League Two and if we can do well in the month of September we may be in the playoff places by the end of next month.
Below is a review of my personal objectives for the month of August 2012;
- Pick up 3 points in the league (Achieved - Total, 7)
- Ask board to find a parent club (Not Achieved)
